Chicago Cubs: Time to Break the Curse
Posted on June 16, 2013 at 10:05 AM.
Week 1 Update: Pitching: Hey guys, the pitching here has not been great in week 1, never giving up less then 3 runs, and giving up 9+ runs twice. Allen Webster had a strong first outing then came back with a rough one giving up 10 ERs. Chris Heston hasn't been looking pretty either, with a 4.50 ERA. But Erik Surkump, another SP fighting for a rotation spot, has a 1.80 ERA and is pitching fantastic. Alex Wood, and Jose DeJusus, also fighting for spots, are also doing well, with a 1.80 ERA for wood and 2.08 for DeJusus.

Week 1 Update: Hitting: The hitting has been their though, Anthony Rizzo has 3 HRs and is batting .356, and Salty has 2 HRs. Albert Almora is showing that even though he is 19, he can play. Batting .280. Alex Yarbrough, fighting to be the utility man is hitting .308.

Record 2-5.

Week 2 Update: Pitching: Week 2 is just like week 1, the same guys doing well and the same guys struggling.

Week 2 Update: Hitting: Darwin Barney and Willie Bloomquest are both dead cold, batting .209 and .154. Rizzo is still scowlding the ball with 6 HRs, and Salty bombed another HR as well to have 3 already. Brett Jackson and Soler are both below the .260 mark, in the mid .250's. Darnell McDonald is also making a case to be a bench player, batting .286 with 1 HR. Andres Torres was on track to make the roster, but his BA is .250.

Record: 4-9

Week 3 Update: Pitching: The pitching still hasn't been there with Webster having an ERA of 7.13-- he was on track to have a rotation spot but his stats are showing otherwise. Chris Heston has calmed down and now has a 3.50 ERA. Surkamp still has a great .287 ERA. Drake Britton and Alberto Cabrera, both strong minor leaguers last year, both have ERA's above 7. Jose DeJusus is doing fantastic with a 1.42 ERA, and Michael Bowden lowered his 6 points, to a 3.68 ERA.

Week 3 Update: Hitting: The hitting has calmed down a bit, with Bloomquest raising his to .193 and Barney raising his to .226, Rizzo is batting .333 with 8 HRs. But Salty is hitting .211 with 3 HRs. Schierholtz and Brett Jackson are dead cold, as well as Albert Almora. Torres rose his BA to .300 and Yarbrough is dead cold. Darnell is now batting .300 and is on track to make the big leagues.

Week 4 Update: Allen Webster lowered his ERA a point to 6.75. He will likely make the roster as the 5th man in the rotation, but will have a short lease. Surkamp and Heston both will make the big league roster, and Jose DeJusus as well, as he has a 1.35 ERA. Alex wood has a 2.03 ERA and will likely make the big leagues as well. With a terrible spring for Alberto Cabrera, he will be sent to AAA, as well as Drake Britton. Bowden will be one that will be the 25th man to make it or, or the top player in AAA. On the offensive side, nothing really changed. Yarbrough pushed his average up to .280 and will likely make the roster on the bench, with Torres, McDonald, and another player TBD.
