Stephen Curry and James Harden are the two most popular picks to win the MVP award, and rightfully so. Other NBA players who at least deserve a mention here are Russell Westbrook and LeBron James.
James Harden has been playing great even without his sidekick, Mr. Soft. Russell Westbrook’s been playing well without Kevin Durant and if we are talking about the greatest basketball player in this generation, it’s LeBron James.
BUT Harden has been shooting 40% since the break but I’ve never heard anyone talk about that. Curry just scored 45 points on 17-23 shooting…. 74% on a playoff team fighting for home court advantage. Yes, Harden has his 30+ and 30+ on a weekly basis but Curry can do that but he doesn’t have to. You can’t rob Curry from the MVP just because his team is great; especially if he’s the reason they’re so good.
Meanwhile, the Golden State Warriors are 66-15 and are 11 games ahead of the 2nd seed in the West, the San Antonio Spurs. Warriors’ point-differential per game is +10.2 and Curry is the reason why. He averages 24/8/4 and he leads the league in win-shares with .284. The Warriors are also averaging 19.8 assists per game (first in the NBA) and they only commit 13 turnovers per game
If you get dizzy when you’re viewing advanced statistics, you can still see that he is the deserving MVP. Why? Because he shoots threes like they’re layups, his handles are so awesome, he made Chris Paul look like he played Twister, and his no-look passes are like Nash’s flashy passes.
If you can also notice, Curry hasn’t played a single minute in the 4th quarter in 17 (+) games this season whilst Harden’s flopping just to get the foul and shoot free throws in crunch time.
Stephen Curry tops James Harden in every offense-related statistics except for Harden’s points per game. He’s played over 300 fewer minutes than Harden because he’s often in control the first three quarters of the game.
Steph is this year’s MVP. Even Coach Kerr agrees: "Steph is (one of) the top few players in the entire league at his position defensively, and he's this offensive machine that we've built our whole attack around," Kerr said. "He has had just an incredibly efficient, productive year and led us to this great win total. I think it makes sense to give him the award.
But if Harden does win it, I hope he refers to the refs as the real MVP.
