Molina's Solo Shot Leads Cards to Win, Snaps Bucs Win Streak

PITTSBURGH - After hanging on for the victory in game one after two Carlos Beltran home runs, manager Clint Hurdle stated that his team was very lucky. It's not every day that a player like Beltran is hitting with no one on base and the fact that he hit two solo shots, allowed us to escape with a W. The Pirates luck sent them to their 7th straight victory. Looking to continue the streak, the Pirates sent red hot Gerrit Cole to the mound to oppose Jake Westbrook, in what was sure to be a pitchers dual.

Gerrit Cole quickly made it through the Cardinals in the the top of the 1st, as Dee Gordon grounded out, Jon Jay lined out, and Allen Craig flew out to end the top half of the inning. In the bottom of the 1st, Asdrubal Cabrera picked up the first hit of the game with one away, but would be stranded as McCutchen grounded out and Alvarez struck out to end the inning.

After a scoreless 2nd inning, Matt Carpenter singled to lead off the 3rd. Jake Westbrook sacrificed him to second. A Dee Gordon ground out would get Carpenter to third. Jon Jay then hit a slow rolling bunt that would bring Carpenter home, but Cole would get the throw to first in time to end the inning.

The Pirates were again held scoreless in the bottom of the 3rd, as Barmes flew out, Cole struck out, and Marte grounded out to end the inning. In the top of the 4th, after Allen Craig struck out and Matt Holliday popped out, Yadier Molina hit a solo shot to center field, giving the Cardinals a 1-0 lead.

Both the Pirates and the Cardinals had excellent pitching performances, as neither bullpen allowed a run the rest of the way. The Pirates were shut down on the final three outs in the bottom of the 9th, as Jason Motte got Alvarez and Byrd to ground out and Russell Martin to fly out at the track to end the game.

Player of the Game

With the calendars flipping into September, the Pirates and Cardinals square off in the rubber match tomorrow afternoon, as A.J. Burnett opposes Adam Wainwright. First pitch, 1:35PM.

McCutchen, Pirates Hold Off Beltran, Cardinals for Seventh Straight Win

PITTSBURGH - The Pirates started off their home stand just the way they hoped, by sweeping the Milwaukee Brewers. Pirate fans are really getting excited with the way the team has been playing recently, as well as the acquistion of Marlon Byrd. The Pirates welcomed the Cardinals to PNC Park for a remaining three game stand. The Cardinals have been up and down all year, but look to gain same ground on the Bucs and get back into the swing of things. The Pirates will send Francisco Liriano to the mound to oppose Joe Kelly in game one.

After a quick top half of the 1st from Francisco Liriano, the Pirates got things rolling in the bottom half of the inning. Neil Walker singled with one away and then advanced to second on a single from Pedro Alvarez. Marlon Byrd then singled, scoring Walker, giving the Pirates a 1-0 lead.

After getting a run of support in the bottom of the 1st, Liriano made quick work of the red birds in the top of the 2nd, striking out Holliday, Freese, and Molina in order. In the bottom of the 3rd, Neil Walker led off the inning with a strike out, but would reach after the called third strike was dropped. Andrew McCutchen then hit a two-run homer, giving the Pirates a 3-0 lead.

After a scoreless 4th, Carlos Beltran hit a towering shot to left, putting the Cardinals on the board and cutting the lead to two.

Beltran would hit another solo shot in the top of the 7th, cutting the Pirates lead to one.

With the game still at 3-2 heading into the top of the 9th, Clint Hurdle called upon Jason Grilli to shut the door on the Cardinals. After getting David Freese to strike out for the fourth time on the night, Yadier Molina grounded out for the second out of the inning. Grilli would then strike out pinch hitter Bourn to collect his 47th save on the season, breaking the Pirates closing record of 46. The win pushes the Pirates current winning streak to seven games.

Player of the Game

After taking game one of the series, the Pirates send Gerrit Cole to the mound to oppose Jake Westbrook. First pitch, 7:05PM.

McDonald Dominates Brewers as Offense Carries Pirates to Series Sweep

PITTSBURGH - With the season quickly winding down, the Pirates took a five game division lead heading into today's game. The Bucs also bring a five game winning streak to the table, after taking three of four from San Francisco and taking the first two games of the series against the Brew Crew. Looking to get a series sweep under the belts, the Pirates sent James McDonald to the mound to oppose Mike Fiers.

After a quick top of the 1st, Fiers allowed a single to Neil Walker, after striking out Starling Marte to lead off the bottom half of the inning. Andrew McCutchen, able to work Fiers count to 2-2, crushed a ball to left field that clanked off the left field foul pole for a two-run shot, giving the Pirates a 2-0 lead.

James McDonald was dealing in this game, as he struck out the side in order in the top of the 2nd. In the bottom of the 2nd, Garrett Jones led off with a strikeout, followed by a ground out from Russell Martin. Asdrubal Cabrera then singled and stole second with James McDonald batting. McDonald then came up with a huge hit of his own, doubling to right and scoring Cabrera, giving the Pirates a 3-0 lead.

James McDonald got into somewhat of a jam in the top of the 3rd, as Betancourt led off with a single, but was then called out at second on a fielder's choice by Fiers. Aoki singled with two away, putting two on with two outs. But Jean Segura would strike out to end the top half of the inning. In the bottom of the 3rd, after Neil Walker popped out, Andrew McCutchen hit his second home run of the game, giving the Pirates the 4-0 lead.

Pitching locked in for each team until the bottom of the 8th when Pedro Alvarez hit a solo shot, giving the Pirates a 5-0 lead.

The Pirates would make it 6-0 as Marlon Byrd doubled and then scored on a double from Garrett Jones. McDonald would stay in for the top of the 9th, looking for a complete game. Aoki would strike out to lead off the inning, followed by a ground out from Segura. After Ryan Braun walked on a 3-1 pitch, Matt Gamel grounded out to end the game.

Player of the Game

After the sweep of the Brewers, the Pirates welcome the Cardinals to PNC Park for a crucial three game series. In game one, Francisco Liriano will take the mound to oppose Joe Kelly. First pitch, 7:05PM.
