KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- Behind three strong innings from lefty Jonathan Sanchez and three of the same from right-hander Jeanmar Gomez, the Pirates held the Astros scoreless until the ninth inning of a 3-2 win Friday afternoon at Osceola County Stadium.

Sanchez, competing for a spot in the Pirates' rotation, put together his best outing of the spring. The lefty pounded the strike zone in an almost uncharacteristic way, throwing 27 of his 32 pitches for strikes after walking eight batters in his first 5 1/3 Grapefruit League innings. Sanchez gave up only one hit -- a leadoff single from Jose Altuve -- and struck out three.

Sanchez got all the run support he needed in the second inning. First baseman Garrett Jones, who went 2-for-3 in his first game since March 6, drove in the game's first run with an RBI single to left field in the second inning, then started a two-run rally in the seventh with another single. Travis Snider doubled in Josh Harrison, pinch-running for Jones, and then scored on a Josh Mercer sacrifice fly, with Astros right-hander Chia-Jen Lo surrendering both runs.

Jones' first hit scored Pedro Alvarez, who led off the second with a double to right off Astros right-hander Brad Peacock.

That was just about all Peacock permitted over five strong innings. Angling for a spot in Houston's rotation, Peacock allowed one run on four hits and a walk while striking out four. He stretched out to throw 84 pitches, 50 for strikes. After allowing five earned runs over his first 3 2/3 innings this spring, Peacock surrendered just one run on six hits in his past eight.

"I didn't have my best stuff today. I'm still trying to find my curveball, but fastball and changeup were very good," Peacock said. "Just letting them put the ball in play today, and the defense did the work behind me."

Up next: The Pirates travel to Fort Myers, Fla., for their third preseason game in Hammond Stadium against the Twins, with Gerrit Cole making his third start in a game that will be available via an exclusive webcast on pirates.com. At the same time, A.J. Burnett will be starting a Minor League game at Pirate City, expected to make 80-85 pitches.

BRADENTON, Fla. -- The Pirates trimmed their Spring Training roster Friday, when they optioned catcher Tony Sanchez and left-hander Andy Oliver to Triple-A Indianapolis.

Sanchez, who has progressed rather slowly since the Pirates selected him fourth overall in the 2009 First-Year Player Draft, made a positive impression in camp, despite hitting only .167 in 18 at-bats over nine games.

"He worked hard this offseason and carried that over. Tony showed up very, very well," said Pirates general manager Neal Huntington. "There were a lot of things for him to build on as he goes out. He has to continue to work on his defensive game and on being a hitter who has power."

Sanchez hit .233 with eight homers and 26 RBIs in 62 games during his first stint in Triple-A last season, which he started with Double-A Altoona, where he hit .277 before his promotion.

The 25-year-old Oliver was acquired in a trade from the Tigers in December and struggled this spring, posting a 13.50 ERA over 3 1/3 innings in three appearances.

Oliver went 5-9 with a 4.88 ERA in 28 appearances (19 starts) last season for Triple-A Toledo in the Tigers' organization. He has made seven big league appearances, most recently in 2011, when he started twice and allowed seven runs in 9 2/3 innings for Detroit.

"We still feel the way we did when we acquired Oliver: We love the arm," Huntington said. "We've got some work to do to help him. We'll get him in the Triple-A rotation and can come up and help us as a starter or out of the bullpen."

The Pirates now have 49 players in Major League camp, including 17 non-roster invitees.

That number includes Jason Grilli, expected back in camp Saturday following his stint in the World Baseball Classic with Italy, and Wandy Rodriguez, still a Classic participant scheduled to start the Dominican Republic's semifinal matchup against either Japan or the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

Jones Returning to Lineup for Friday's Game

CLEARWATER, Fla. -- Garrett Jones will be back on the field for the Pirates on Friday.

Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said after Thursday's 2-1 loss to the Phillies that Jones will play five innings at first base and get two or three at-bats Friday, when Pittsburgh travels to face Houston at Osceola County Stadium in Kissimmee, Fla. Jones has been sidelined since March 6 due to tightness on his left side.

Jones was scheduled to take live batting practice back at the Pirates' Spring Training complex on Thursday.

"Jones had a good day today," Hurdle said.

The first baseman went 3-for-14 in six Grapefruit League games before the injury. He posted a .274/.317/.516 batting line with 27 homers and 86 RBIs in 145 games last season.

Karstens May Make Grapefruit Debut Monday

CLEARWATER, Fla. -- Jeff Karstens saw his first game action of the spring Wednesday in a Minor League game against Phillies Triple-A players, and he might make his Grapefruit League debut as soon as Monday.

Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said Karstens, who had been working his way back from biceps tendinitis, will definitely pitch two innings Monday, but it remains to be seen whether that will be in another Minor League outing or against the Red Sox at McKechnie Field in Bradenton, Fla.

In fact, Hurdle said the Pirates are keeping both slots open until they make a decision.

"It's going to be one or the other," Hurdle said Thursday at Bright House Field.

Karstens is scheduled to throw a side session in the bullpen Saturday. He tossed two innings Wednesday on just 26 pitches, 15 of them for strikes. The Pirates don't need a fifth starter for another 25 days, and Hurdle said Wednesday that the club believes Karstens will be a part of its Opening Day rotation.
Making Rotation Bid, McPherson Bounces Back, Bucs Fall 2-1

CLEARWATER, Fla. -- In the latest turn of what he termed a "roller coaster of a spring so far," right-hander Kyle McPherson showed Thursday at Bright House Field why he's still in the mix for a spot in the Pirates' rotation.

Facing a Phillies lineup that included as many as six of their Opening Day starters, McPherson breezed through five scoreless innings, allowing only four hits with one strikeout. And as Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said, the results were representative of the way he pitched.

"That was a nice five-inning snapshot of what you're looking for from him," Hurdle said.

That hadn't been the case this spring for McPherson, competing with left-hander Jeff Locke for the final spot in the rotation, as he'd allowed eight earned runs on nine hits and four walks in his previous 7 2/3 innings.

But he put it all together Thursday, inducing early contact, keeping the ball down in the zone and letting the Phillies serve up ground balls and catchable fly balls.

"Fortunately the early contact was in my favor today," McPherson said. "Balls on the ground and some fly balls that we could handle, and I was able to go deep enough into the ballgame to give the team a chance."

On top of that, McPherson blanked a lineup loaded with left-handed threats, including Ryan Howard, Chase Utley and Domonic Brown, while staying within his prescribed 65-70 pitch count well enough to get through five innings. All that's left for McPherson to do, Hurdle said, is repeat Thursday's performance on a consistent basis.

As for that fifth-starter competition, McPherson said everything you'd expect him to -- that he's focusing on his work on a day-to-day basis rather than thinking about possibly landing a spot on the Opening Day roster. Locke, meanwhile, has given up six runs on 15 hits and six walks while striking out 10 in 13 1/3 innings over four starts.

As expected, Hurdle wouldn't tip his hand when asked if he's seen either pitcher create any separation.

"I wouldn't tell you if I did," the manager said with a grin. "You guys are watching the same games I am. You're seeing what I see."

On Thursday, the Pirates saw a "snapshot" of McPherson at his best, one they certainly wouldn't mind seeing more of this spring.

Highly-Anticipated Game will be Televised throughout the Region Beginning with 1:30 p.m. Pregame

ALTOONA, Pa. - With an increased demand for tickets and a vast interest in the first exhibition game between the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Altoona Curve in nearly 13 years, the Curve and Fox 8 (WWCP-TV) are proud to announce that the game will be televised locally to residents in Altoona and its surrounding regions on March 30. The game can be found on Channel 8 on Atlantic Broadband, DirecTV, Comcast and DISH Network.

The meeting between the parent club and its affiliate is the first since a meeting on May 15, 2000 when the Curve bested the Pirates, 8-5 in front of 7,346 fans. As the game quickly approaches at the end of this month, the Curve are expecting a capacity-crowd for the marquee event at Peoples Natural Gas Field.

"Having been sold out of seats since early December and with our standing room tickets nearly exhausted, we're thrilled that our partners at Fox 8 have agreed to televise the game," said Curve General Manager Rob Egan. "We know Frank Quitoni and his experienced staff will put on a great show for the viewers of this once-in-a-generation event."

Pregame coverage for the game will begin at 1:30 p.m. with first pitch in the contest scheduled for 2 p.m. The 30-minute pregame show will feature interviews with many of the former Curve players that will be taking the field in Altoona for the first time since they were promoted in their rise to the big leagues.

"All our employees are proud to broadcast this event," said Fox 8 General Manager Frank Quitoni, "as well as to showcase the wonderful baseball facility and the spirit and high quality of baseball the Altoona Curve brings to our region."

In addition to the game being televised live on FOX 8, fans out of the area can log on to FOX8tv.com or abc23.com to watch a live stream of the game.

Play-by-play for the game will be provided by Curve broadcaster Mike Passanisi, who is entering his fourth season in Curve, Pa. and his seventh season behind the mic overall. Passanisi will be joined in the booth by former Pittsburgh Pirates' pitcher Stan Belinda, who pitched for the Buccos from 1989 to 1993 before he was traded to Kansas City. Belinda, a native of Huntingdon, Pa., spent 12 seasons in the big leagues from 1989-2000 and appeared in 585 career games while compiling a 41-37 record to go with 79 saves.
Pirates Walk-Off Again, 5-4 Over Jays

BRADENTON, Fla. -- Carlos Paulino drilled an RBI single with one out in the 10th inning Wednesday, giving the Pirates a 5-4 victory over the Blue Jays.

Paulino's drive to the center-field wall -- he was credited with a single, as he stopped running before reaching second -- off Tommy Hottovy (0-2) scored Kelson Brown, who was running for Tony Sanchez.

Kyle Waldrop (1-0), the Bucs' fifth pitcher, blanked the Blue Jays in the top of the 10th.

It was the Pirates' second straight walk-off win, and their fourth straight overall, improving their record to 8-10. Toronto fell to 7-10-1.

A record crowd of 8,439 at McKechnie Field saw an impressive outing by starter James McDonald.

McDonald recovered from a rough start to become the first Pirates pitcher this spring to work into the sixth inning.

Four of Toronto's first five batters reached base -- including Emilio Bonifacio on an infield single which third baseman Pedro Alvarez threw wildly for an error that scored one run. Adam Lind followed soon after with an RBI single.

From that point on, McDonald retired 14 of 16 batters until leaving following a one-out single in the sixth by Lind -- who eventually scored on Mike Nickeas' single off reliever Mark Melancon to give Toronto a 3-1 lead. McDonald allowed five hits and three runs in 5 1/3 innings, with two walks and five strikeouts.

Buehrle allowed four hits, walked one and did not have a strikeout.

The Pirates had cut the deficit to 2-1 in the third when Starling Marte tripled and scored on Andrew McCutchen's single.

With the Bucs trailing, 4-1, in the eighth, Josh Harrison made it 4-2 with an RBI single off Neil Wagner, and Pittsburgh tied it with two runs in the bottom of the ninth.

Felix Pie led off the ninth with a home run off Tyson Brummett, Toronto's sixth pitcher. Pinch-hitter Lucas May walked and pinch-runner Dan Grovatt advanced to second on Alex Presley's grounder before scoring on a two-out ground-rule double by Harrison, his fourth consecutive hit in the last two games, to make it 4-4.

Up next: The Pirates travel to Clearwater on Thursday for their second of two spring games against the Phillies, who had blanked them on one hit on March 4. Kyle McPherson will make a start important for his rotation candidacy, coming off two outings in which he allowed a combined eight runs in 5 2/3 innings.

BRADENTON, Fla. -- Jameson Taillon and Vic Black, two of the Pirates' highly touted pitching prospects, were included in the 11 players sent to Minor League camp Wednesday as the club made its first cuts of the spring.

Taillon had just returned to the Major League camp off a performance in the World Baseball Classic for Canada against the United States that further impressed Pittsburgh general manager Neal Huntington. Nevertheless, the 2010 No. 1 Draft pick retraced the '12 spring steps of Gerrit Cole, who got his first exposure to a big league environment in Spring Training, then a quick ticket to Minor League camp.

"He handled himself well, showed the maturity, poise and stuff that has us so enthusiastic about his future," Huntington said of Taillon, the organization's No. 2-ranked prospect who had allowed one earned run in four innings of his Classic start. "We wanted to give him a taste of Major League Spring Training, take away a bit of the awe factor -- though I don't think much awes him -- then get him ready for the season. Exact same situation as we had with Gerrit a year ago."

Black, ranked as the Pirates' No. 17 prospect by MLB.com, was considered a prime candidate for the bullpen, but became an early victim of the intense competition that has developed for three voids.

Black was optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis, along with fellow right-handers Stolmy Pimentel, Hunter Strickland and Duke Welker, infielder Clint Robinson and outfielder Jerry Sands. Sands and Pimentel both came from Boston in the deal involving Joel Hanrahan.

Reassigned to Minor League camp along with Taillon were infielders Matt Hague and Anderson Hernandez, outfielder Darren Ford and righty Erik Cordier.

The moves left 51 players in camp, including Jason Grilli and Wandy Rodriguez, continuing in Classic play with Italy and the Dominican Republic, respectively.

Sands and Robinson were part of the congested situations at first base and right field, positions both play. Sands will play primarily right field in the Minors, according to Huntington.

"There's very little doubt in our minds that they'll help us out this season at some point," the GM said. "We wanted to make sure to give them at-bats [in Minor League exhibitions, which began Wednesday] to get them off to a good start.

"We've got good depth and want to make sure these guys get an opportunity to play. We told everybody out the door: We're not going to go with 12 pitchers and 13 players all season; the more guys we have come up and not miss a beat, the better team we'll be."

If the first batch of cuts included a surprise, it was Hague. The sensation of last spring -- when he led the Pirates with seven homers and earned "The Hit Collector" nickname from manager Clint Hurdle -- was enjoying a similar run in exhibition play. Hague had six hits in his last seven at-bats and departed with a .364 average.

"It was tough to send him out in the middle of the stretch he's in," Huntington said, "but we've got some guys ahead of him in the competition [for backup corner infielder]. He'll work a lot at third base. He worked so hard this offseason, is so much more mobile at third."

Black (2.25 ERA), Pimentel (2.45), Strickland (0.00), Welker (3.00) and Taillon (one unearned run in two shutout innings in only outing) all made an impression in exhibition play.

"They all have good stuff but are at different points in their development," Huntington said. "They all showed up well in Spring Training. They'll continue their growth, and are guys we feel very comfortable with."

BRADENTON, Fla. -- It could be the Pirates' next marketing slogan:

"Come See Our Guys Pick Off -- and Tick Off -- Their Guys."

Putting on display what they have spent so much time preaching and practicing, Buccos pitchers have been pickoff-crazy through the first half of the exhibition season. The unofficial count is eight -- three more than in all of the 2012 season.

Such execution has been the spring's biggest reward for manager Clint Hurdle -- who opened camp sworn to address the struggles of last season, when opponents were successful on 154 of 173 stolen-base attempts.

"It's shown them they're reaping the benefits of the hard work they've put into it," Hurdle said. "You're always happy when your early work transfers into game execution. They're starting to talk about it among themselves, and that can have even more impact."

Pitchers from Gerrit Cole to Jeff Locke have had a hand in it, but the leader with two pickoffs is none other than A.J. Burnett, which is significant for two reasons: One, Burnett virtually took the mound last season with a "Go Ahead, Steal" sign on his back; two, seeing the ace buy into this new approach so totally has to influence the whole staff.

"I know they're gonna run on Burnett," said the man himself, "so any little thing I can do to get better, it'll help this team get better. So I'm all in. We've been very monotonous about it, working on it daily, but I've shown twice so far that it does help."

BRADENTON, Fla. -- One of the few teams yet to whittle down population in the Major League camp, the Pirates are expected to get into that act on Wednesday, when they check back into McKechnie Field following Tuesday's break in their schedule. Wednesday is a logical cutdown day also because it signals the start of exhibition play between Minor League teams.

Still, do not anticipate wholesale trims from the 62 players in big league camp.

For one thing, the actual playing force is considerably smaller than that. Pitchers Jason Grilli (Italy) and Wandy Rodriguez (Dominican Republic) are still at the World Baseball Classic, four other pitchers (Jeff Karstens, Charlie Morton, Francisco Liriano, Jose Contreras) and a catcher (Ali Solis) are getting treatment, and infielders Chase d'Arnaud (strained thumb) and Anderson Hernandez (shoulder) are on the blink.

For another, the competition in several areas remains too tight to make any early calls. The best battles are in the bullpen and on the bench.

The skirmish for three vacant bullpen seats was highlighted during the three-game winning streak the Pirates will take into Wednesday's game against the Blue Jays at 1:05 p.m. ET. In those three games, 13 relievers combined to allow two earned runs in 17 2/3 innings, while compiling 22 strikeouts.

"The competition can be contagious as well. When the bar has been heightened, a different type of adrenaline can show up," manager Clint Hurdle noted. "I'm liking what I'm seeing develop, and we still have over two weeks to go. But I like the place we're at right now, in regards to the competition in different spots."

Pirates Walk-Off Winners

Josh Harrison's second run-scoring hit tied the game and then Alex Presley, who singled with one out in the bottom of the ninth, scored on Carlos Paulino's fielder's choice as the Pirates walked off a winner against Baltimore, 4-3, on Monday at McKechnie Field.

Jared Goedert singled off Adam Russell to lead off the inning and was forced out at second on Clint Robinson's grounder to second. Jordy Mercer ran for Robinson, and took third on Presley's single before scoring on Harrison's single to make it 3-3.

Paulino hit a grounder to second and, even with the Orioles' infield playing in, Presley beat Ryan Flaherty's throw home to win it.

Kris Johnson pitched a scoreless top of the ninth to earn the victory.

Brad Hawpe homered to right off Orioles reliever Daniel Schlereth in the eighth to make it 3-2.

Pirates starter Jeff Locke looked strong through 1 2/3 innings, but surrendered hits to seven of the last 13 men he faced. Included in that stretch was L.J. Hoes' run-scoring single and a long home run from Lew Ford, his second of the spring.

"Fastballs, up," Locke said about what he did wrong after allowing nine baserunners in 3 1/3 innings. "You'd like to get better results, but I did get all my work in and had a good feeling for my other pitches. That's a good-hitting team, aggressive, they like to hit early in the count and they made me pay for my mistakes."

Reliever Phil Irwin, a 26-year-old right-hander who spent most of last season in Double-A, struck out seven in 3 2/3 innings.

Orioles left-hander Zach Britton lost the shutout with two outs in the seventh on Harrison's RBI double, the only hit he allowed, to make it 3-1.

Up next: The Pirates are off Tuesday -- no game, no workouts -- and will be back at McKechnie Field on Wednesday to play host to the Blue Jays at 1:05 p.m. ET. James McDonald is scheduled to face Mark Buehrle.

Jameson Taillon throwing the first pitch - Team Canada vs Team USA - March 10, 2013

SCOTTSDALE, Az - Jameson Taillon, (the #15 ranked prospect according to MLB.com), utilized his dual citizenship to play for Team Canada. Fittingly enough, Taillon would get his first start against Team USA. Taillon, who pitched 4 innings, allowed 2 R on 4 H, 1 BB, and 3 SO. Taillon did not allow a run until his 4th inning of work, allowing Team USA to tie Team Canada 2-2. Team Canada would go on to lose 9-4, eliminating them from the WBC.
