Pirates Win Fourth Straight, Down Cards 3-2

PITTSBURGH - With a sweep of the Cincinnati Reds, the Pirates play host to another division rival in the St. Louis Cardinals. The Cardinals are off to a slow start so far this season, coming into PNC Park with just a 4-8 record. The Pirates look to continue their hot streak and put some distance between them an their division foes.

In the top of the 1st, James McDonald allowed a single John Jay, followed by a double to Matt Carpenter, scoring Jay to put the Cards up 1-0. With 2 outs and Matt Carpenter still at 2nd, Yadier Molina singled to center; but Carpenter would be called out and home to end the inning. The Pirates came right back in the bottom of the 1st, as Andrew McCutchen doubled to get Neil Walker to score, tying the game at 1. In the top of the 3rd, McDonald got in to some trouble, as John Jay doubled, then reaching 3rd on a wild pitch, which was followed by a walk to Allen Craig for two on with two outs. But McDonald got Matt Holliday to ground out to end the inning. In the bottom of the 3rd, the Pirates struck like they did in the 1st, as Walker singled, followed by a double by Andrew McCutchen. With men on 2nd and 3rd, Pedro Alvarez hit a sac fly to score Walker, giving the Pirates a 2-1 lead. Pitching locked in for the 4th, 5th, and 6th innings as each pitcher was spot on. But in the top of the 7th, Matt Carpenter would triple with two outs and would score on an RBI single from Allen Craig to tie the game at 2. But the Pirates would strike back in the bottom of the 8th, as Starling Marte doubled, followed by Andrew McCutchen reaching on a dropped third strike. Pedro Alvarez singled to center, scoring Marte, to put the Pirates up 3-2. Jason Grilli came in for his 5th save opportunity of the season, getting John Jay get caught heading to 3rd on a single by Matt Carpenter to end the game and give the Pirates their 4th straight victory.

Wandy Dazzles as Pirates Sweep Reds

PITTSBURGH - The Pirates got off to a slow start to the season, falling to a 3-6 record. But after heading home to PNC Park for a 10 game home stand, the Pirates have taken the first two games of the three game set against the Reds. The Reds send Johnny Cueto to the mound to keep the Pirates at bay and attempt to avoid the sweep.

After a scoreless 1st inning, Garret Jones started off the bottom of the 2nd second, singling to center. Russell Martin followed Jones with a single of his own to put men on 1st and 2nd with no outs. On a 3-2 pitch from Cueto, Clint Barmes singled up the middle to score Jones, putting the Pirates up 1-0. Wandy Rodriguez was looking to help his cause, but a failed bunt attempt gave the Pirates two outs in the inning, which would be ended on a ground out from Jose Tabata. In the bottom of the 3rd, Neil Walker and Andrew McCutchen lead off the inning with singles, putting the Pirates again in scoring position. After a passed ball by Ryan Hanigan which advances the runners, Garret Jones hit a sac fly to score Walker, putting the Pirates up 2-0. Wandy Rodriguez was cruising through the game, having a 3 pitch inning in the 4th. WIth a no hitter in place through 5 2/3, Rodriguez gave up a two out single to pitcher Johnny Cueto to end the not hit bid. Rodriguez came right back and struck out Shin Soo Choo to end the inning. In the bottom of the 8th, McCutchen singled, followed by a walk to Gaby Sanchez, allowing Russell Martin to hit an RBI single to put the Pirates up 3-0. Clint Hurdle decided to keep Rodriguez in the game with a low pitch count and things got a tad hairy, as Zach Cozart singled, followed by Negron reaching on an error by Barmes. With runners on 1st and 3rd with one out, Brandon Phillips grounded out which scored Zach Cozart. But Wandy escaped trouble, getting Joey Votto to ground out to end the game and gave the Pirates the victory and the sweep.

Burnett's Complete Game Gem Leads Pirates to 2-1 Victory

PITTSBURGH - Even though it's relatively early in the season, any game against a division foe is extremely important. The Pirates sent A.J. Burnett to the mound to oppose Daniel Corcino and the Reds, looking to take game two of this three game set.

Burnett and Corcino exchanged scoreless 1st and 2nd innings. In the bottom of the 3rd, A.J. Burnett singled on an 0-2, 1 out count, but Starling Marte and Neil Walker both flew out to end the inning. After a 1-2-3 inning for Burnett in the Top of the 4th, Garrett Jones and Gaby Sanchez both singled with 2 outs. But Russell Martin, back in the lineup, struck out to end the inning. With two outs in the top of the 5th, Ryan Hanigan hit a solo home run to put the Reds up 1-0. In the 6th, Burnett ran into trouble again, allowing a single to Joey Votto to start the inning. After striking out Jay Bruce, Burnett allowed singles to Kristopher Negron and Todd Frazier, loading the bases for Ryan Hanigan who was looking to replicate his 5th inning performance. But Burnett got the best of him this time around, forcing him into a double play to end the inning. With the effort Burnett was giving so far, the Pirates bats finally woke up. In the bottom of the 6th, Neil Walker started the inning off by singling up the middle. Andrew McCutchen, already extending his hit streak to 10 games, came in and hit a double to the gap, scoring Walker to tie the game at 1. With Pedro Alvarez grounding out, McCutchen advanced to 3rd with one out. Garrett Jones took advantage of the opportunity, flying out to right, scoring McCutchen to give the Pirates a 2-1 lead. A.J. Burnett started pulling from within in the 7th, striking out Cozart, Ludwick, and Choo in order. Then, in the 8th, after a Brandon Phillips ground out, Burnett got Joey Votto and Jay Bruce to strike out. Closing in on 100 pitches, manager Clint Hurdle decided to keep Burnett in the game to give the bullpen some rest, and it paid off as Burnett went the distance with his first complete game of the year.

The Pirates look to sweep the Reds tomorrow, which would put them into a tie for first in the NL Central.

Barmes' 8th Inning Home Run Backs Lockes Gem, Propels Pirates to 2-1 Victory

PITTSBURGH - The Pittsburgh Pirates couldn't be more grateful to be back at PNC Park. After a sub .500 road trip, including being swept by the Diamondbacks, the Pirates looked to get back to winning ways. But their first opponent back home, was the NL Central leading Cincinnati Reds.

After an 8 pitch at bat, Jeff Locke finally got Shin Soo Choo to strike out swinging, followed by ground outs from Brandon Phillips and Joey Votto. As recent offensive struggles have plagued the Pirates, Reds pitcher Mike Leake was chomping at the bit. But as recently seen, the Pirates got some hits with 2 outs, including a single by Andrew McCutchen and a double by Pedro Alvarez. But Gaby Sanchez would ground out to end the inning. After a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the second from Jeff Locke, Michael McKenry cracked the scoreboard for the Pirates, with the solo home run to deep left field, almost going foul. Locke and Leake both locked in and tossed shut out baseball for the 4th, 5th, and 6th innings. In the top of the 7th, Locke got into big trouble, with Todd Frazier doubling to center and then stealing 3rd with no outs. Ryan Hanigan struck out swinging for the first out of the inning, followed by a single from Ryan Ludwick to tie up the game 1-1. Locke got Cozart to strike out to end the inning. Clint Hurdle decided to go to the bullpen for the 8th, as Locke had started losing some command at the end of the 7th. Jared Hughes came in for the 8th and struck out two in a row to end the inning. As has been for the Pirates so far this season, the most unlikeliest of heros, Clint Barmes, put the Pirates ahead 2-1 on a solo home run on a 3-2 count. With the lead, Jason Grilli came in the 9th for the save opportunity. Grilli got Joey Votto to fly out and Jay Bruce to ground out. But Todd Frazier gave the Reds one more chance, by singling to center. But Grilli wasn't about to let this game go, as he got Ryan Hanigan to strike out on 3-2 fastball to give the Pirates the victory.

Swept Away - Pirates Lose to Diamondbacks 3-1

PHOENIX - The Pirates looked to avoid being swept by the Diamondbacks, as well as to hit the .500 mark on their west coast road trip, before heading back to PNC Park.

Jonathan Sanchez and Wade Miley were cruising through the first three innings, in a classic pitchers dual. In the top of the 4th, Neil Walker and Andrew McCutchen both singled, followed by Perdo Alvarez and Gaby Sanchez flying out. With two outs, Garrett Jones singled to load the bases for Michael McKenry, who would fly out at the warning track to end the inning. The Diamondbacks took advantage of the Pirates offensive woes, as Martin Prado doubled to deep left to lead off the bottom of the 4th. Willie Bloomquist flied to center for a single, scoring Prado to give the Diamondbacks a 1-0 lead. Jonathan Sanchez would get out of the inning, though, with a strikeout of Adam Eaton. Clint Barmes led off the top of the 5th with a ground rule double, but couldn't get anyone to score him to leave the game at 1-0. Jonathan Sanchez kept on dealing in the bottom of the 5th, striking out two and getting a ground out to end the inning. The Pirates started to rally in the top of the sixth, with a lead off double from Andrew McCutchen, followed by a single from Pedro Alvarez, getting Cutch to 3rd. But Gaby Sanchez would strike out and Garrett Jones would run into a double play to end the inning. In the bottom of the 6th, Willie Bloomquist tripled to center, followed by a fielders choice by Montero. The fielders choice scored Bloomquist, who was called safe at home, much to the discretion of Clint Hurdle, giving the D-Backs a 2-0 lead. Michael McKenry brought the Pirates back to within one on a solo home run in the 7th. But that's as close as the Pirates would get, as J.J. Putz came in to close the game and send the Diamondbacks to a sweep of the Pirates.

Injury Update

Russell Martin out of lineup due to elbow sprain - may be out 1-6 days - no DL at this time.

Hudson Blanks Pirates 2-0

PHOENIX - The Pirates received bad news even before the game began, with Russell Martin feeling pain in his elbow, taking him out of the lineup for todays game. Losing game one of the series, the Pirates looked to get back on track against Daniel Hudson.

Andrew McCutchen started out in the 1st inning, hitting a 2 out double to extend his hitting streak to 8 games. But the Pirates couldn't muster any offense to get him in. The Pirates started again in the 2nd, with Neil Walker hitting a single up the middle, followed by a double from Michael McKenry with one out. Josh Harrison and James McDonald both flew out to end the inning, leaving Walker and McKenry stranded. James McDonald ran into his first signs of trouble in the bottom of the 2nd, as Aaron Hill reached on a throwing error by Gaby Sanchez with no outs. Eric Chavez then reached on another error by Sanchez. Fortunately, McDonald was able to get Goldschmidt and Ross to strike out, following by a fly out from Daniel Hudson. After a scoreless 3rd, McDonald again ran into trouble, as Sanchez committed his 4th error of the game, scoring a run from Chavez, as well as Ross scoring on a single from Prado to put the Diamondbacks up 2-0. McDonald then escaped the 5th inning, after a misplay in the outfield by Starling Marte almost cost a run. McDonald was pulled in the 6th for Chris Leroux who struck out the side in order in the 7th, collecting 4 strikeouts. The Pirates couldn't get any offense going, and received an inconsistent performance from James McDonald who may still be struggling from elbow tightness. The Pirates look to avoid the sweep in game three of this three game set.

Wandy's Strong Outing Not Enough as D-Backs Slide Past Bucs 2-1

ARIZONA - The Pirates headed into Arizona taking their first series from the Dodgers, something they haven't been able to say in a long time. The early west coast trips have haunted the Pirates for the past several years, but the Pirates look to turn things around with another series win in Arizona.

Starling Marte started the game off right, with a leadoff double. But Marte, got caught in a rundown heading for 3rd, after a Neil Walker single, to end the inning. Wandy Rodriguez, who pitched great his first game of the season, started off allowing a hit and then hitting a batter, but struck out Paul Goldschmidt to end the inning. In the top of the 3rd, the Pirates definitely got some unexpected offense, coming off a solo home run from Josh Harrison, giving the Pirates a 1-0 lead. Ian Kennedy and Wandy Rodriguez continued to duel it out into the 6th, when the Pirates had both Starling Marte and Neil Walker on base with only 1 out. But Kennedy got Andrew McCutchen to strike out swinging and Gaby Sanchez to fly out to end the inning. Ian Kennedy was pulled after six innings of work, after a single by Garrett Jones, but the Pirates were unable to take advantage of the opportunity. With Wandy nearing 90 pitches heading into the 7th, Clint Hurdle chose not to make the move to the bullpen and kept him in the game. The D-Backs took advantage. Parra singled to center, followed by a double to deep left by Martin Prado to score Parra and tie the game at 1. Willie Bloomquist came in and singled, sending Prado to 3rd. Montero hit a sac fly into double play scoring Prado to give the D-Backs a 2-1 lead heading into the 9th. The D-Backs turned to J.J. Putz to close, who got Sanchez, Jones, and Alvarez all to fly out, dropping the Pirates to 3-4 on the season.

LOS ANGELES - Game 3 of this three game series between the Pirates and Dodgers was looking to be a good one, with A.J. Burnett opposing Clayton Kershaw on the mound. The skies were dreary and there was a light rain falling, but not enough to keep the game from starting.

In the top of the first, Andrew McCutchen hit a two out double to get the Pirates their first hit of the game. But as we've seen so many times so far this season, Pedro Alvarez struck out swinging to end the inning. In the bottom of the 1st, Burnett ran into early trouble when Andrew McCutchen slipped while running to catch a fly ball in the outfield, allowing a triple to Carl Crawford. Mark Ellis would then single, putting the Dodgers up 1-0. But the Pirates came right back in the top of the 2nd, with both Josh Harrison and Russell Martin singling, followed by a three run homer by Clint Barmes to give the Pirates a 3-1 lead. Burnett allowed a leadoff double to Matt Kemp in the bottom of the 4th, but squandered any sort of rally but getting out of the rest of the inning untouched. Burnett and Kershaw each threw a scoreless 5th inning, but trouble started to brew for Burnett in the bottom of the 6th. Mark Ellis led off with a single, followed by free pass walks to Adrian Gonzalez and Matt Kemp. Burnett completely lost control of his outing after a single by Andre Ethier which deflected off RF Garrett Jones, allowing both Ellis and Gonzalez, tying the game at 3. That would end the day for A.J. Burnett, as Clint Hurdle turned to Justin Wilson who had a rough outing the last time he back Burnett. Wilson gave up an RBI single to A.J. Ellis which gave the Dodgers a 4-3 lead, allowing Jared Hughes to come in and strike out two to end the inning. With Kershaw being pulled after 7 innings, the Dodgers turned to Chris Capuano. With 2 outs and a 3-2 count in the Top of the 8th, Pedro Alvarez singled to give the Pirates some life. Then when the Pirates seemed down and out, Gaby Sanchez blasted a 2 run home run to give the Pirates a 5-4 lead heading into the bottom of the 8th. Jared Hughes who struck out two in the 7th, struck out the two more and then allowed a loud out at the warning track by Hanley Ramirez. Jason Grilli came in for the save opportunity and ended the game by striking out Carl Crawford to collect his 3rd save of the season. By winning game three, the Pirates won their first series of the season. Note: Josh Harrison went 4-4, with tho doubles and two singles.

LOS ANGELES - Jeff Locke made his season debut for the Pirates, after winning the number five spot in the rotation coming out of Spring. Some may say he won this spot due to inconsistency from other pitchers and injuries, but Locke will tell you he rightfully deserves the spot. Locke faces a tough task against a power hitting Dodgers lineup, in game three of the three game series.

After a scoreless top of the 1st from , Jeff Locke looked even better by getting through the inning on three pitches. Then in the 3rd, Locke got into a 2-2 count and singled up the middle for his first hit of the season. Unfortunately, Jose Tabata would run into a double play to end the inning. With the game tied at 0 heading into the 4th, Jeff Locke hit a bump in the road, allowing a solo home run to Matt Kemp to give the Dodgers a 1-0 lead. After a quick top of the 5th, Locke again found himself in trouble, allowing a leadoff single to Andre Ethier, which was followed by an A.J. Ellis RBI double to put the Dodgers up 2-0. But the bleeding hadn't stopped, when pitcher Ted Lilly sacrificed Ellis to 3rd, allowing Carl Crawford's single to score Ellis giving the Dodgers a 3-0 lead. As the Pirates again made no noise in the 6th, Matt Kemp started off the bottom of the 6th with a single, which chased Jeff Locke from the game. Justin Wilson came in from the pen and forced Hanley Ramirez into a double play to end the inning. In the top of the 7th, the Bucs bats came alive with a string of hits including a Pedro Alvarez single and Travis Snider single. Michael McKenry pulled off a sac bunt to put Alvarez in scoring position, for Clint Barmes to hit a sac fly, bringing the score to 3-1. The Pirates struck again in the top of the 8th, with an RBI single by Travis Snider to bring the Bucs within 1. But the rally would fall short and the Pirates would fall to the Dodgers 3-2. The Bucs look to take the series from the Dodgers in game 3 tomorrow.

LOS ANGELES - Jonathan Sanchez was a non roster invitee for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2013. After his first few outings, no one thought he would make the rotation. But with injuries to several pitchers and a good ending to his Spring, Sanchez made the Pirates roster, as well as the rotation, taking the number 4 spot. After a dreadful 2012 season, Sanchez looks to rebound and revitalize his career in Pittsburgh.

After Josh Beckett and Jonathan Sanchez pitched a scoreless 1st inning, Gaby Sanchez lead off the 2nd inning with a led off solo home run to put the Pirates up 1-0. No one expected this matchup to be the pitching dual it was, but Jonathan Sanchez was dealing, collecting 8 strikeouts in his 7 innings pitched. In the top of the 5th, Sanchez tried to help his caused, singling to lead off the inning. But Josh Beckett kept the Pirates at bay, and squandered any attempt at runs. But in the 8th inning, Garrett Jones stepped in to pinch hit for Sanchez and blasted a solo home run to put the Pirates up 2-0. Jason Grilli came in for the 9th and struck out Carl Crawford to end the game and collect his 2nd save of the season.

McDonald Leaves With Elbow Tightness, Bucs Hang on 3-0

PITTSBURGH - 2012 saw two sides of James McDonald. A really good side and a really bad side. McDonald started the year looking like he had finally figured himself out and was pitching lights out baseball. However, when the games started to count, McDonald started to falter. J-Mac looks to rebound in 2013, starting with preventing the Cubs from sweeping the Opening Series from the Pirates.

After a scoreless first inning, the Pirates were the first to crack the scoreboard, following a solo home run from Gaby Sanchez. McDonald, who pitched a scoreless top of the 3rd, decided to help his cause by leading off in the bottom of the 3rd with a single. Starling Marte would sacrifice J-Mac to 2nd, followed by a single from Neil Walker and then an RBI single from Andrew McCutchen to give the Pirates a 2-0 lead. McDonald got into a jam in the top of the 4th with men on 1st and 2nd, but quickly ended the inning with a strikeout to Stewart. After a brief threat from the Pirates in the 5th, no runs were scored. There was a scary moment in the top of the 6th with 1 out and a 0-2 count to Navarro, with men on first and second. James McDonald felt some tightness in his elbow and had to come out of the game. Chris Leroux took over for him and got Navarro to fly out and then Stewart to strikeout. The Pirates received some extra cushioning in the bottom of the 6th, when Travis Snider hit a solo home run to right field. The bullpen was able to take over for McDonald and shut down the Cubs to help the Pirates avoid a series sweep. Up next for the Pirates: heading out West for a series with the Dodgers and Diamondbacks.
