Puig Silences PNC Park with Grand Slam in 9th, Ties Series at 1
PITTSBURGH - The Pirates, plain and simple, stole game one from the Dodgers at PNC Park. Clayton Kershaw had run roughshot through the lineup all night, until a rocky 8th inning forced him from the game. The Pirates were then able to take advantage of the Dodgers bullpen, as Asdrubal Cabrera's two run shot tied the game and made way for Russell Martin's walk-off in the 11th. The Dodgers would be out for revenge in game two.
With another much expected pitchers dual, both Wandy Rodriguez and Zack Greinke made quick work of their opposition in the 1st inning, quickly taking the ball game into the 2nd inning unscathed. After another quick inning from Rodriguez in the top of the 2nd, Pedro Alvarez doubled off of Greinke to lead off the bottom half of the inning. Garrett Jones stepped in and worked Greinke to a full count, forcing Greinke to throw a meatball down the pipe for an RBI double, which would score Alvarez from second, giving the Pirates a 1-0 lead.
After getting out of the inning, the Dodgers started to work on Rodriguez in the 3rd, as Andre Ethier hit a one out single. Zack Greinke followed with a single of his own, putting runners on first and third with only one away. Hanley Ramirez then hit a sac fly to right field, allowing Ethier to score from third and tie the game at one.
Rodriguez would get Herrera to ground out to end the inning. The pitchers dual picked up again through the 4th and 5th innings, as neither team would get a runner into scoring position. In the top of the 6th, after a line out from Greinke, Hanley Ramirez singled and then stole second with Herrera at bat. The stolen base would prove costly, as Herrera singled to right, scoring Ramirez, and giving the Dodgers a 2-1 lead.
But the Pirates weren't about to quit, as Greinke walked Alvarez to lead off the bottom of the 7th. Garrett Jones then singled, followed by a single from Marlon Byrd to load the bases with no one out. Manager Don Mattingly would see enough, as he would come out to pull Greinke and call upon Belisario from the pen. Belisario immediately got Russell Martin to pop out on an infield fly rule for the first out. Asdrubal Cabrera would then step in a single to right, scoring Alvarez to tie the game at 2.
With the bases loaded and still only one out, Belisario would get pinch hitter Travis Snider to strike out and Starling Marte to pop out to end the Bucco's huge opportunity to take the lead. After a quick 8th inning, the Dodgers were down to their final three outs. Perkins would get Herrera to strike out to lead off the inning, but would then allow a double to Adrian Gonzalez. Clint Hurdle would call upon Tony Watson for the final two outs. Matt Kemp would hit a single, advancing Gonzalez to third. Carlos Ruiz then hit a fielder's choice to load the bases with still only one way. Rookie Yasiel Puig stepped up to the plate and on an 0-1 made the biggest impact thus far, a grand slam that was crushed out of PNC Park, giving the Dodgers a 6-2 lead.
The Pirates were unable to get anything going offensively in the bottom of the 9th and dropped game two to the Dodgers in unfortunate fashion.
With the series tied at 1, the Dodgers now have the upper hand as the series heads to Los Angeles. With a travel day tomorrow, the Pirates and Dodgers will square off for game three on Thursday, as James McDonald takes the mound to oppose Jaime Garcia. First pitch, 4:05PM.

CLEAR THE DECK: Martin's Walk-Off Home Run Sends Bucs to Game 1 Win
PITTSBURGH - The Pirates haven't experienced the postseason since 1992. That's 21 years. 21 years too long. With the excitement of their first NL Central crown, the Pirates welcomed an electric, sellout crowd to PNC Park to kick off the National League Divisional Series against the Dodgers.
As A.J. Burnett took the mound for the Pirates, a deafening "Let's Go Bucs" chant could be heard across the stadium. With the adrenaline pumping, Burnett through a first pitch strike to kick off the series.
After retiring Hanley Ramirez on three pitches, Burnett walked a patient Mark Ellis. Trouble quickly found Burnett as Adrian Gonzalez doubled on the second pitch he saw, scoring Ellis to give the Dodgers a 1-0 lead.
Burnett wouldn't let the early run phase him, as he'd get big strikeouts from Matt Kemp and Andre Ethier to end the Dodgers half of the inning.
Taking the mound for the Dodgers, lefty phenom Clayton Kershaw. Kershaw made quick work of Starling Marte and Neil Walker to lead off the inning, but would then allow a triple to Andrew McCutchen to give the Bucs a runner in scoring position. Pedro Alvarez would step in with two away and would strike out, but would reach first as the ball got away from Carlos Ruiz, giving the Pirates two base runners. Unfortunately, Garrett Jones would ground out to Adrian Gonzalez to end the inning.
Burnett was able to make quick work of the Dodgers in the top of the 2nd, getting Ruiz to ground out, Puig to pop out, and Juan Uribe to strike out. Kershaw would match Burnett in the bottom of the 2nd, only allowing a single to Asdrubal Cabrera, which was deflected off of Mark Ellis. Kershaw would strike out A.J. Burnett to end the inning.
After allowing a single to Clayton Kershaw to lead off the 3rd, Burnett would get Ramirez, Ellis, and Gonzalez to strike out in order. Burnett and Kershaw would continue their pitchers dual into the top of the 6th inning, when Adrian Gonzalez hit a solo shot to center field, giving the Dodgers a 2-0 lead.
Clint Hurdle decided to pinch hit for Burnett in the bottom of the 7th, ending the aces day. Burnett finished with a strong seven innings of two run ball; but in line to take the loss. After a scoreless 8th from Chris Leroux, Kershaw was able to get Neil Walker and Andrew McCutchen to fly out for a quick two outs. But Pedro Alvarez would then double, followed by a single from Garrett Jones to give the Pirates two on with two outs. Manager Don Mattingly would make the call to the bullpen, bringing in Kenley Jansen, who would get Marlon Byrd to ground out to end the Pirates half of the 8th.
With the Pirates down to their final three outs and facing Dodgers closer Brandon League, fans were glued to the edge of their seats. Russell Martin lead off the inning with a single and would be the tying run, as Asdrubal Cabrera hit a two-run bomb to right field, tying the game at 2.
Bullpens would keep the game at two into the bottom of the 11th, when Russell Martin led off with a solo, walk-off home run to give the Pirates the NLDS game 1 victory.
After a thrilling walk-off win in game one, the Pirates will host the Dodgers for game two of the best of five NLDS, as Wandy Rodriguez opposes Zack Greinke. First pitch, 7:05PM.
