Missed Opportunities Doom Pirates as Reds Take Series

PITTSBURGH - With the trade of Homer Bailey, the Pirates would be opposing a Reds bullpen day, as Jonathan Broxton took the mound to oppose lefty Wandy Rodriguez. With a stellar performance from A.J. Burnett the night before, the Pirates looked to continue their winning ways.

Wandy Rodriguez breezed through the top of the 1st inning, getting Brandon Phillips and Cesar Izturis to ground out, followed by a swinging strike out from Joey Votto to retire the side. The Pirates looked to jump over Broxton early, as Starling Marte led off the inning with a single. After a Travis Snider ground out advanced Marte to second, Andrew McCutchen hit a line drive to center field, scoring Marte to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead.

With McCutchen at second and one out, neither Brandon Inge or Garrett Jones could get him home, as each flew out to end the inning. The top of the 2nd went much like it did yesterday, as Rodriguez got Jay Bruce and Chris Heisey to strike out, as well as a fly out from Ryan Ludwick. The Pirates didn't show much life in the second as well, as Russell Martin popped out, Jordy Mercer struck out, and John McDonald lined out to end the inning.

2-2 pitch to Ryan Hanigan - gone. The solo shot would tie the game up at 1.

Wandy would get newly acquired Mike Olt to strike out on three pitches following the solo shot. Broxton and Phillips would each ground out to end the inning. The Pirates looked like they were rallying for a lead in the the 3rd, as Travis Snider singled with 2 outs, advancing to 3rd on a single by Andrew McCutchen. McCutchen would then steal 2nd with Brandon Inge batting. Inge would walk on a called ball four, loading the bases with 2 outs. But Garrett Jones would get caught swinging in the dirt, as he grounded out to Joey Votto to end the threat and the inning.

With two outs in the top of the 4th, the Reds took their first lead of the game, as Jay Bruce homered to left field, giving the Reds a 2-1 lead.

After a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the 5th, the Pirates again tried to claw their way back into the game, as Travis Snider and Andrew McCutchen again singled with 2 outs to put runners at first and second. Pedro Alvarez pinch hit for Brandon Inge, who would strand Snider and McCutchen as he grounded out to end the inning.

As the Reds again went down in order in the top of the 6th, Garrett Jones knotted the game at 2 on a solo shot to deep right field.

After a scorless 7th inning, Rodriguez allowed a lead off single to Todd Frazier. Devin Mesoraco would pinch hit for Negron and would ground into a double play. Brandon Phillips would follow with a 4 pitch walk, then advancing to third on a single by Izturis. After a visit from Ray Searage, Rodriguez allowed a single to Joey Votto, scoring Phillips to give the Reds a 3-2 lead.

The Pirates couldn't get anything going against lefty Oliver in the 8th, as well as the Reds were quieted in the top of the 9th by Duke Welker. Down by one, down to their final three outs, pinch hitter Clint Barmes singled off closer Aroldis Chapman to lead off the inning. John McDonald would sacrifice Barmes to 2nd with one out. With Gaby Sanchez pinch hitting for the pitcher spot, Clint Barmes would reach 3rd on a wild pitch by Chapman. But Chapman would start showing his flame thrower arm, striking out Sanchez and getting Starling Marte to pop out to end the game.

Burnett K's 12 as McCutchen's Home Run Sends Pirates to Shutout Win

PITTSBURGH - After losing three of four from the Tigers, the Pirates lost in heartbreaking fashion to the Reds on Friday night. Andrew McCutchen got the Pirates run support, but the pitching faltered, sending the Pirates spiraling to their fourth straight loss. With the NL Central lead now only a half game ahead of the Reds, the Pirates send their ace A.J. Burnett to the mound, to oppose the Reds ace Johnny Cueto.

In the top of the 1st inning, A.J. Burnett showed why he is the veteran ace on the team, getting Winker and Phillips to strike out, followed by a fly out by Joey Votto to end the inning. In the bottom of the 1st, Starling Marte led off with a single, followed by a strikeout from Travis Snider. With McCutchen up to bat, Marte got picked off at 1st to give the Pirates 2 outs. Then, so eerily similar to last nights game, Andrew McCutchen crushed a 1-2 pitch from Cueto to deep left field for a solo home run, giving the Pirates a 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the 2nd, Burnett continued his strikeout tear, getting Jay Bruce and Chris Heisey to strike out swinging. Todd Frazier would line to left for a single, but would be stranded at first as Ryan Hanigan grounded out to end the inning. Johnny Cueto would match Burnett in the bottom of the 2nd, getting Jones to strike out, followed by ground outs from Michael McKenry and Jordy Mercer to end the inning.

The third inning was much of the same, as Burnett allowed a single to Winker in the top of the inning and Cueto allowed a single to Barmes in the bottom of the inning, neither advancing past second base. In the top of the 4th, after striking out Votto and getting Bruce to ground out, Chris Heisey lined to right for a single, then advancing on a single from Frazier to put two on with two outs.

But Burnett would end the threat, getting Ryan Hanigan to fly out at the warning track to end the inning. The only offense the Pirates would muster in the bottom of the 4th, was a single by Pedro Alvarez with one out, followed by a fielder's choice from Garrett Jones. Michael McKenry would fly out to end the inning. The 5th, 6th, and 7th innings saw no hits and no walks, as both Burnett and Cueto retired the sides in order.

In the top of the 8th, with his pitch count closing in on 100, A.J. Burnett dug deep, getting pinch hitter Ryan Ludwick to ground out, Winker to strike out on a 2-2 pitch, and Brandon Phillips to strike out on a 2-2 curveball to end the inning.

With the 1-0 lead heading into the 9th, Jason Grilli received the call, chasing his 18th save on the season. Grilli showed no signs of rust, getting Joey Votto and Jay Bruce to strike out looking and Chris Heisey to fly out to end the game.

Pirates Lose 2-1 Heartbreaker to Reds

PITTSBURGH -After getting swept in their two game set against the Tigers at PNC Park, the Pirates had lost their straight game of the season, their longest losing streak thus far. Looking to right the ship, the Pirates welcomed the Cincinnati Reds to PNC Park, an NL Central foe on the heels of the Pirates first place lead. Taking the mound for the Pirates would be Francisco Liriano, opposing the Reds Daniel Corcino.

In the top of the 1st inning, Francisco Liriano looked sharp as can be, getting phillips to fly out, followed by a strikeout from Winker and a fly out from Votto to end the inning. After Daniel Corcino got Starling Marte to strike out to end the inning, Andrew McCutchen got the Pirates on the board first, hitting a solo home run to right field, his 100th career home run! giving the pirates a 1-0 lead.

Travis Snider would ground out and Pedro Alvarez would strike out to end the inning. After a scoreless top of the 2nd, Russell Martin singled in the bottom of the 2nd with one out. John McDonald would reach first on a fielder's choice, as Martin was called out at second. Clint Barmes would ground out to end the inning.

In the top of the 4th, Liriano ran into the first sign of trouble in the game, allowing a lead off double to Winker. After Liriano got Votto to pop out to Alvarez at third, Todd Frazier struck out swinging and Chris Heisey flew out to end the inning. Daniel Corcino would get the Pirates beef of the order in McCutchen, Alvarez, and Jones to strike out to get a clean 1-2-3 inning.

Francisco Liriano returned the favor in the top of the 5th, getting Ludwick, Hanigan, and Negron to strike out in order.

In the top of the 6th, Liriano again ran into trouble with 2 outs, as Winker singled, followed by Votto reaching on a ball deflected off of Marte for a single. But Liriano would power past Frazier, striking him out to end the inning. Marte would lead off the bottom of the 6th with a double, but couldn't get past 2nd, as Snider, McCutchen, and Alvarez would fly out to end the inning.

The Reds finally got to Liriano in the 7th, as Chris Heisey led of with a single and then scored in a double by Ryan Ludwick to tie the game at 1.

Ryan Hanigan would ground out, advancing Ludwick to 3rd with two outs. But Liriano would get Corcino to fly out to end the scoring threat and the inning. In the bottom of the 7th, Garrett Jones singled, but would be called out at 2nd on a fielder's choice by Russell Martin. Martin would take 2nd on a wild pitch but would be stranded as Clint Barmes grounded out to end the inning.

The biggest blow of the game came in the 8th with Mark Melancon pitching, as Winker singled with one out, followed by a walk issued to Joey Votto. Frazier would reach on a fielder's choice, putting runners on 1st and 3rd with 2 outs. Working the count to 2-2, Chris Heisey would single on the 6th pitch of the at bat, scoring Lutz, pinch running for Winker, giving the Reds a 2-1 lead.

Andrew McCutchen would ground out to end the inning. After a clean half inning from Chris Leroux, the Pirates were down to their final three outs. With Aroldis Chapman pitching, Pedro Alvarez led off with a walk. Garrett Jones got the fans to their feet as he hit a long fly ball to center field, only to be caught at the wall for the first out. Then, the worst possible happening for the Pirates, Russell Martin would ground into a double play to end the game.

Pirates Swept as Tigers Rally for 6-2 Victory

PITTSBURGH - After losing game one at home to the Tigers, the Pirates looked to get back on track in interleague play. Doug Fister would take the mound for the Tigers, as Jonathan Sanchez would oppose for the Pirates.

In the bottom of the 1st, Felix Pie would make his Pirates debut, flying out to right field for the first out. Starling Marte would follow with a single. With Andrew McCutchen batting, Marte stole 2nd base, his fifth on the season. With 2 outs, Pedro Alvarez hit a 2-run home run to give the Pirates a 2-0 lead.

In the top of the 2nd, Prince Fielder led off the inning with a walk, followed by a single to Alex Avila who would advance on error by Starling Marte, scoring Prince Fielder to cut the Pirates lead to 2-1.

Leading off the bottom of the 3rd, Felix Pie was hit by a pitch. With Starling Marte up to bat, Pie was going for steal, but Marte would line out to 2nd base, forcing a double play. Andrew McCutchen would fly out to end the inning. In the top of the 4th, Jonathan Sanchez looked the strongest thus far in the game, getting Cabrera, Fielder, and Dirks out on 4 pitches to end the inning.

In the bottom of the 5th, Jonathan Sanchez looked to help his own cause, doubling to the center field gap, but would be called out at third reaching for a triple. After a scoreless 6th inning, the Pirates made some noise in the bottom of the 7th, as Jordy Mercer singled, followed by Clint Barmes reaching on a dropped third strike with two outs. But Jonathan Sanchez would ground out to end the inning.

With his pitch count still in the 70's, Clint Hurdle decided to keep Sanchez in for the top of the 8th, but the decision would come back to haunt the Bucs. Victor Martinez came in to pinch hit, and reached on a fielding error by Jonathan Sanchez. Austin Jackson then pinch hit and was hit by a pitch, putting two on with no outs. Quintin Berry then doubled, scoring Martinez and Jackson to put the Tigers up 3-2.

Duke Welker would then be called upon to pitch, immediately allowing a double to Cabrera, scoring Berry to put the Tigers up 4-2 tigers. Prince Fielder followed with a single, scoring Cabrera to push the lead to 5-2. Dirks would ground out to end the inning. In the top of the 9th, with recent call-up Justin Wilson pitching, Butler, PA's own Don Kelly hit a solo home run to put the Pirates away for good, as the Tigers took a 6-2 lead.

In the bottom of the 9th, with the Pirates down to their final out, Russell Martin singled, but would be stranded as Jordy Mercer grounded out to end the game.

The Pirates announced the following roster moves today:

Recalled from AAA - Indianapolois

Justin Wilson struggled in the beginning of the season for the Pirates, but after putting up impressive numbers in AAA, Wilson should step in just fine for a struggling Tony Watson. In AAA, Wilson pitched 13 innings, allowing 8 hits, walking 9, while striking out 10. Wilson compiled a 2.77 ERA and a 1.31 WHIP.

Felix Pie was tearing the cover off the ball in Spring Training, but wasn't able to make the club. With an injury to Jose Tabata, and Jerry Sands not performing up to expectations, Felix Pie looks to show management that he should've made the team from the beginning. After 45 games in AAA, Pie hit 6 home runs and collected 20 RBI's, while earning a .308 AVG and a 1.000 Field%.

Optioned to AAA - Indianapolis

After Justin Wilson was optioned to AAA earlier in the year, Tony Watson took over as the lone lefty in the Pirates pen. But Watson continued to struggle, allowing timely hits and huge runs, costing the Pirates games. In his time in the majors this season, 14.1 innings to be exact, Watson allowed 19 hits, walked 2, and struck out 14. Watson compiled a 5.02 ERA and a 1.47 WHIP.

After an injury to Jose Tabata, Jerry Sands was called upon, as he was tearing it up in AAA. But the big leagues weren't as kind to Sands, as his lack of speed hurt him in the outfield and his offense never really got going. In 18 games with the Pirates, Sands had 0 home runs and only 2 RBI's, hitting his way to a .250 AVG, and also having a .909 Field%.
