Pirates Knock Around Cubs in 4-1 Win
CHICAGO - After Francisco Liriano nearly threw a no hitter against the Cubs in game one, the Pirates looked to continue their success at Wrigley Field, as A.J. Burnett took the mound to oppose Scott Baker.
Baker, having a decent season thus far, made quick work of the Pirates in the top of the 1st, as Pie, Freddy Sanchez, and McCutchen would each ground out. In the bottom of the 1st, with two outs, Starling Castro singled, but for naught, as Anthony Rizzo followed with a fly out to end the inning. In the top of the 2nd, Pedro Alvarez singled on a ball deflected off of Alfonso Soriano, followed by a single from Garrett Jones, putting two on with no outs. Gaby Sanchez then hit into a double play, advancing Alvarez to third. Clint Barmes then struck out to end the Pirates threat. In the bottom of the 2nd, Burnett collected two strikeouts and a groundout to end the inning.
The third inning didn't bring much action, as the Pirates only base runner was when Russell Martin reached first on a fielding error by Anthony Rizzo. Nothing came from it in the top of the 3rd, and Burnett breezed through the Cubs in the bottom half. In the top of the 4th, Andrew McCutchen led off with a walk, followed by a single from Pedro Alvarez to put two on with no outs. Garrett Jones then grounded out to first, scoring McCutchen to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead.
Gaby Sanchez would ground out to advance Alvarez to third, but Barmes would fly out to end the inning. In the top of the 6th, Andrew McCutchen took the first pitch he saw out of the park for a solo shot, his 26th on the season, giving the Pirates a 2-0 lead.
With the score still 2-0 leading into the top of the 7th, Ian Stewart looked to get the Cubs on track as he lined a ball to left field, only to be robbed by Felix Pie for the out.
Burnett would get the remaining two outs to end the 7th. After a scoreless top of the 8th, Duke Welker came out of the bullpen, looking to bridge the gap into Jason Grilli. Welker, who had yet to be scored on yet, made his first appearance in the set up role. Nervous from the situation, Welker allowed a two out solo shot to Sappelt to cut the Pirates lead to 2-1.
Welker would then get David DeJesus to pop out to end the inning. In the top of the 9th, the Pirates pulled away from the Cubs, as Clint Barmes led off with a solo shot, followed by Russell Martin scoring on an RBI single by Freddy Sanchez to push the lead to 4-1. Jason Grilli would come in to close in the bottom of the 9th and would continue to make it look easy, as Castro grounded out, Rizzo struck out, and Schierholtz flew out to end the game.
Player of the Game:
With the series already in hand, the Pirates look to sweep the Cubs in the series finale, as Wandy Rodriguez takes the mound to oppose Travis Wood. First pitch, 2:20PM.

Liriano Flirts With No-Hitter as Pirates Down Cubs 2-0
CHICAGO - Already breaking the high point of 16 games over .500 in 2012, the Pirates look to continue their winning ways, as they head into Wrigley Field to oppose their NL Central foe, Chicago Cubs. The Pirates haven't been getting much done offensively, but what they have been getting has been just enough to take their lights out pitching to another tier. Taking the mound for the Pirates in game one, is lefty Francisco Liriano, opposing right Jeff Samardzija.
In the top of the 1st inning, Starling Marte reached first base on a fielding error by Starlin Castro. Marte took advantage of the error, stealing second base to put himself into scoring position. Marte would get stuck at second however, as Freddy Sanchez followed with a lineout, with McCutchen and Alvarez each flying out to end the inning. In the bottom of the 1st, Francisco Liriano was dealing some high cheese, as he struck out Barney and Sappelt to lead off the bottom of the 1st. Starlin Castro then reached on a fielding error by Freddy Sanchez, but would leave to not as Anthony Rizzo flew out to end the inning.
The 2nd inning didn't bring much action, as Asdrubal Cabrera reached on a throwing error by Samardzija, but would not advance as Snider and Martin grounded out to end the inning. Liriano would get three quick outs in the bottom of the 2nd, as Hairston, Castillo, and Soriano each flew out. Liriano helped his own cause in the top of the third, as he led off with a single, then advancing to second on a sacrifice by Starling Marte. After Freddy Sanchez grounded out, which advanced Liriano to third, Andrew McCutchen singled, scoring Liriano to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead.
Liriano would get Stewart and Barney to strike out in the bottom of the 3rd, as well as a Samardzija ground out. In the top of the 4th, Pedro Alvarez crushed a 2-2 pitch to deep center field, his 25th home run on the season, giving the Pirates a 2-0 lead.
The 5th - 8th innings can only be summed by saying not much happened, as Liriano continued to deal strikeout pitches, taking a no hitter into the top of the 9th. Ian Stewart stepped up to lead off the 9th, only to strike out for Liriano's tenth punch out of the game. Pinch hitter Navarro then stepped in and took the first pitch he saw for a bloop single, ending the no hit bid. After Liriano allowed the single, Darwin Barney would ground into a double play to end the game.
Player of the Game:
After a near perfect game from Francisco Liriano in game one, the Pirates and Cubs square off in game two, as A.J. Burnett opposes Scott Baker. First pitch, 4:05PM.

Cole Embarrasses Phillies in 2-0 Shutout
PITTSBURGH - With the Phillies taking game one and the Pirates taking game two, each team looked to get state supremacy with a win in game three. The 4th of July matchup shaped up to be a good one, as rookie Gerrit Cole takes the mound to oppose lefty Cole Hamels.
In the top of the 1st inning, Cole struck out Revere and Michael Young, before allowing a single to Carlos Ruiz. Cole would then get Ryan Howard to strike out to end the inning. In the bottom of the 1st, the Pirates got to Hamels right away, as Starling Marte led off with a single, followed by a double from Freddy Sanchez to put two on with no outs. Andrew McCutchen then doubled to center, scoring Marte to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead.
With Sanchez on second, Pedro Alvarez grounded out, scoring Sanchez to give the Pirates a 2-0 lead. Hamels would shut down the Pirates after allowing the two runs, striking out Garrett Jones and getting Asdrubal Cabrera to ground out to end the 1st. Cole made quick work of the Phillies in the top of the 2nd, as Utley, Delmon Young, and Rollins grounded out to end the top of the inning. Russell Martin led off the bottom of the 2nd with a single, then advancing to second on a ground out by Travis Snider. Gerritt Cole then had his first hit on the season, a single to center. Russell Martin attempted to score on the play, but was called out at home.
After a scoreless top of the 3rd, Andrew McCutchen singled with one out, then stole second and third, for his 27th and 28th steals on the season. Pedro Alvarez would strike out and Garrett Jones would ground out to end the inning. In the top of the 4th, Gerrit Cole again retired the side in order, striking out Young, Ruiz, and Howard.
In the top of the 5th, Delmon Young would double with one out, but would be stranded as Rollins struck out and Brown grounded out. Chad Durbin would replace Hamels in the 7th, and would go pitch for pitch with Cole who was left in heading into the top of the 9th. After walking Kevin Frandsen and a pitch count at one hundred, Cole would leave to a standing ovation, as Hurdle would turn to closer Jason Grilli to end the game.
Grilli would get Revere and Young to pop out, followed by a single by Ruiz with two outs. But Ryan Howard would strike out swinging to end the game.

McDonald Fans 12 as Pirates Down Phillies 4-2
PITTSBURGH - After dropping game one of the series to the Phillies in embarrassing fashion, the Pirates looked to rebound in game two. Taking the mound for the Pirates, is early CY Young candidate James McDonald, opposing Kyle Kendrick of the Phillies.
In the top of the 1st, McDonald made quick work of the Phils, getting Revere to strike out, Young to ground out, and Ruiz to strike out to end the top of the inning. In the bottom of the 1st, after Asdrubal Cabrera lined out, Freddy Sanchez singled. After Andrew McCutchen flied out, Pedro Alvarez doubled, advancing Sanchez to third. But Garrett Jones would fly out to end the inning.
In the top of the 2nd, McDonald struck out the heart of the lineup in order, including Howard, Utley, and Young. The Pirates quickly got runners on base in the bottom of the 2nd, as Starling Marte led off with a single, followed by a steal to second with Snider batting. Russell Martin then singled, advancing Marte to third with one out. James McDonald helped his own cause, sacrificing to Howard, which scored Marte to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead.
After getting Rollins and Brown to strike out to lead off the 3rd, home plate umpire Clyde Washington didn't help McDonald much, as several close pitches went against him. Kyle Kendrick singled, followed by a single from Revere to put two on with two outs. Michael Young then doubled, scoring Kendrick and Revere to give the Phillies a 2-1 lead.
Pitching controlled the 4th and 5th innings, as neither team got a runner on base. In the top of the 6th, McDonald got Revere to strike out, but allowed singles to Young and Ruiz with one out. Ryan Howard then singled to load the bases. But McDonald would get a low fastball in to Utley, who would ground into a double play to end the Phillies threat. In the bottom of the 6th, Freddy Sanchez led off with a single, then scored on a two-run shot from Andrew McCutchen to push the Pirates ahead 3-2.
In the top of the 7th, Young and Rollins led off with singles, followed by Dominic Brown reaching on a fielders choice. After pinch hitter Frandsen popped out, Ben Revere hit a 2-2 pitch down the line, only to be robbed by Starling Marte in foul territory to save the Pirates lead.
The Pirates added on in the bottom of the 7th, as Gaby Sanchez reached on a fielders choice that scored Travis Snider, giving the Pirates a 4-2 lead. Duke Welker and Tony Watson combined for a scoreless top of the 8th. The Pirates threatened again in the bottom of the 8th, loading the bases with two outs. Russell Martin worked the count to 3-2, only to be called out on strikes looking at a pitch that should've been called a ball. Jason Grilli came in for the 9th and collected his 30th save on the season to preserve the Pirates victory.
Player of the Game:
The Pirates and Phillies face off in the rubber match tomorrow afternoon, as Gerrit Cole opposes lefty Cole Hamels. First pitch, 1:35PM.

Lannan Leads Phillies to Pounding of Pirates
PITTSBURGH - After taking two of three from the Brewers at home, the Pirates welcomed cross-state rival Philadelphia to PNC Park for a three game set. The Pirates have had the Phillies hand the past few years, especially at home, and look to keep the trend going. Game one is a matchup of lefties, as Philadelphia sends John Lannan to the mound to oppose Wandy Rodriguez.
Rodriguez, not reflected by his record, has probably been one of the most consistent pitchers on the staff thus far. The Phillies weren't phased by his under 3.00 ERA, and got to him early. After getting Revere to ground out, Frandsen singled to left for a single. Carlos Ruiz then followed up with a single of his own, putting runners at first and second with one out. Rodriguez would get Howard to strike out on a 1-2 curveball for the second out. Delmon Young stepped in to the batters box and made the first crucial play of the game, singling to center to score Frandsen, giving the Phillies a 1-0 lead.
John Lannan made quick work of the Pirates in the bottom of the 1st, getting Marte to strike out, followed by fly outs from Cabrera and McCutchen. In the top of the 2nd, Jimmy Rollins reached first on a bunt single to Rodriguez. After Brown struck out, Lannan reached on a fielders choice, advancing Rollins to second. Ben Revere then singled, loading the bases with one out. Kevin Frandsen would then make the second blow of the game, hitting a single to left, scoring Rollins and Lannan to put the Phillies up 3-0.
Ruiz then grounded out to Rodriguez, which scored Revere to push the score to 4-0. Rodriguez would get Howard to strike out to end the inning. Rodriguez allowed another run in the 3rd, as Brown hit a sac fly to score Young, giving the Phillies a 5-0 lead. Lannan continued to mow down the Bucco's, leaving them hitless through three. With Rodriguez struggling, Clint Hurdle went to the bullpen and called upon Jeff Karstens, who can eat up multiple innings if necessary. The Phillies wouldn't even give him the chance if he wanted to, as they got to him as well. After walking Ben Revere, Frandsen singled, putting two on with no outs. Ruiz grounded out, advancing the runners to second and third. After Ryan Howard struck out for the third time, Karstens allowed a three-run shot to Delmon Young to push the Phillies ahead 8-0.
Chris Leroux was called upon in the top of the 5th, finally being able to retire the side in order. With two outs in the bottom of the 5th, Travis Snider finally broke the Pirates into the hit and run columns, hitting a solo shot to right, cutting the score to 8-1.
The Phillies would strike back in the top of the 6th, as Carlos Ruiz led off with a single, followed by two-run blast from Ryan Howard to extend the lead to 10-1. The 7th inning was quick for both sides, as each was retired in order. After a scoreless 8th pitched by Duke Welker, the Pirates were able to at least pose a threat in the bottom of the 8th. Garrett Jones led off with a single, followed by a single from Travis Snider. Russell Martin grounded out, but advanced the runners. Freddy Sanchez then grounded out to second, which scored Jones to cut the lead to 10-2. Brandon Inge, pinch hitting, would ground out to end the inning.
After a scoreless top of the 9th, the Pirates looked to get some sort of rally going, as Starling Marte reached first on a throwing error. But the very next pitch would see Asdrubal Cabrera grounding into a double play for a quick two outs. Andrew McCutchen would then ground out to end the game.
Player of the Game:
After an eight run drubbing in game one, the Pirates look to get revenge, as James McDonald takes the mound to oppose Kyle Kendrick. First pitch, 7:05PM.
