By Jeff Todd [July 31, 2013 at 8:07am EST]
By Jeff Todd [July 31, 2013 at 8:07am EST]
8:07am: Hank Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle tweeted that the Pirates are closing in on a deal to acquire Giants outfielder Hunter Pence. Schulman reports that the Giants asking price was quite high as of yesterday, but if the right package was offered, they'd be willing to deal him.
10:26am: Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review has tweeted that 18-year old pitcher, Luis Heredia, is being discussed as a piece of the package to acquire Pence.
3:42pm: Sources have confirmed that a trade sending Hunter Pence to the Pirates is no longer in the works. The Pirates reportedly offered Kyle McPherson, Luis Heredia, and Tyler Glasnow in exchange for Pence and a minor league prospect; however, the Giants decided not to pull the trigger.
The Pittsburgh Pirates and Minnesota Twins have agreed to a trade, sending RP Glen Perkins and SP Rich Harden to the Pirates, and SP Jeff Locke and SS Dilson Herrera the Twins.

Pirates 9th Inning Rally Falls Short as Cards Prevail 4-3
PITTSBURGH -With the trade winds swirling as the trade deadline draws nears, the Pirates and Cardinals were at it again in game two of the four game set. After a dominant outing from Gerrit Cole in game one, A.J. Burnett took the mound to oppose Jake Westbrook in game two.
In the top of the 1st inning, A.J. Burnett would make quick work of Dee Gordon and Jon Jay, before issuing a walk to Allen Craig with two outs. Burnett would get Holliday to fly out to end the inning. Jake Westbrook would have an easier time with the Bucs in the bottom of the 1st, getting Tabata, Walker, and McCutchen to each ground out to end the inning.
Burnett and Westbrook would match each other out for out in the 2nd inning. The Pirates made the first bit of noise in the bottom of the 3rd, as A.J. Burnett reached on a throwing error with one away. After Jose Tabata struck out, Neil Walker singled, putting two on with two outs. Andrew McCutchen would then strike out to end the inning.
After a quick 4th inning, Burnett would strike out David Freese, before giving up a single to Carlos Beltran. After a Matt Carpenter ground out for the second out of the inning, Burnett would walk Westbrook on six pitches. Jon Jay then singled, scoring Beltran to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead.
Allen Craig followed with a bases clearing double, scoring Westbrook, Gordon, and Jay, giving pushing the Red Birds ahead 4-0.
Burnett would get Holliday to ground out to end the inning. In the bottom of the 5th, Jose Tabata singled with one out. With McCutchen at bat, Tabata stole second, then scoring on a single from McCutchen to cut the Cards lead to three.
After Burnett got the Cards in order in the top of the 6th, Pedro Alvarez doubled to deep right to lead off the bottom of the inning. After a Garrett Jones ground out, Russell Martin hit a two-run blast to pull the Pirates to within one.
The bullpens would keep the score at 4-3 heading into the bottom of the 9th, as the Pirates were looking for a walk-off win. With two outs, Gaby Sanchez hit a pinch hit single, followed by a single from Jose Tabata putting runners at first and third. Neil Walker stepped in with a chance to tie or win the game, as he worked the count to a full count. Jason Motte then reared back and threw a 98MPH fast ball to strike out Walker and send the Cardinals to victory.

With the four game set tied at one, the Pirates send Wandy Rodriguez to the mound to oppose Adam Wainwright. First pitch, 7:05PM.
Pirates, Giants in Trade Discussions
By Steve Adams [July 30, 2013 at 4:27pm EST]
By Steve Adams [July 30, 2013 at 4:27pm EST]
Rob Biertempfel of the Post Gazette has reported that the Pirates and Giants are in serious trade discussions. Sources have yet to confirm who the two teams are discussing, but with Alex Presley and Starling Marte on the 15-day DL, one would have to think the Pirates are looking into outfield help. With the Pirates being 21 games over .500 and certainly looking to contender for an NL Central crown, an outfield, other than McCutchen, of Tabata, Snider, and Darren Ford surely does not sound threatening down the stretch.

Pirates Rumors - Marte, Twins
By Steve Adams [July 30, 2013 at 3:45pm EST]
By Steve Adams [July 30, 2013 at 3:45pm EST]
With the trade deadline quickly approaching, the Pirates hold an 8.5 game lead over the Cardinals and a 10 game lead over the struggling Reds.
With the recent injury to LF Starling Marte, the Pirates have some big decisions to make - and fast. With the recent call-up of CF Darren Ford, the Pirates outfield consists of Ford, Jose Tabata, Andrew McCutchen, and Travis Snider. Both Alex Presley and Starling Marte are on the 15-day DL. GM Neil Huntington stated that the injury to Marte, although unfortunate, happened at a time where the Pirates can not only look internally, but externally.
With the injury to Marte, it looks as if Garrett Jones will continue playing first base. Sources say that a trade for Twins first baseman, Justin Morneau, has recently lost steam. Rob Biertempfel of the Post Gazette has reported that the Pirates, however, are still talking with the Twins on some bullpen help. No word yet on who the Bucs are interested in.

Cole Shakes Off Rough Start to Dominate Cards in 4-2 Win
PITTSBURGH - The Pirates were all smiles on the plane ride back from Miami, as a three game sweep was quite an accomplishment, regardless of the team they were facing. Awaiting them at home would be a welcomed 10 game home stand, starting off with their NL Central foe, St. Louis. The Cardinals have been scuffling as of late, but as recent history would suggest, they're not yet out.
Gerrit Cole took the mound for the Pirates, allowing two runs on four hits in his previous outing in Washington, ending in a no decision. Cole got the game started the way he likes, striking out Dee Gordon on four pitches. But things would turn sour quickly, as Cole allowed a solo jack to Jon Jay, giving the Cardinals a 1-0 lead.
Allen Craig followed the solo shot with a single, followed by a double from Matt Holliday to advance Craig to third. Yadier Molina would hit a sac fly, scoring Craig to give the Cardinals a 2-0 lead.
In the bottom of the 1st, Starling Marte led off with a single, then advancing to second on a ground out from Neil Walker. Andrew McCutchen then took the first pitch he saw out of PNC Park for a two-run shot, tying the game up at two.
Cole and Kelly would battle it out and keep the lineups scoreless, as neither team was able to muster any offense until the Pirates were up in the bottom of the 5th. Travis Snider led off with a single, followed by a single from Asdrubal Cabrera to put two on with no outs. Gerrit Cole then sacrificed the runners to second and third. Jose Tabata then hit a sac fly to center, scoring Snider to break the tie and give the Pirates a 3-2 lead.
Neil Walker followed with a single of his own, scoring Asdrubal Cabrera to push the Pirates lead to 4-2. After Gerrit Cole struck out the side in the top of the 5th, he would continue his tear as he struck the side out again in the top of the 6th, keeping the Pirates lead at two. With the bullpens taking over in the final innings, Jason Grilli came on for his 38th save opportunity. Grilli would get Jay to fly out, Craig to ground out, and Holliday to fly out at the track to end the game.
Player of the Game

Pirates Rally Late for Sweep of Marlins
MIAMI - After coming back from an early deficit in game two of the series, the Pirates looked to get their offense going, trying to sweep the Marlins to keep their current four game winning streak alive. The Pirates would turn to Francisco Liriano to oppose Nathan Eovaldi.
The top of the 1st was a quick inning for Eovaldi, getting Marte to pop out, followed by strike outs of Tabata and Jones to end the top half of the 1st. Liriano would struck out Juan Pierre to lead off the bottom of the inning, followed by a single from Placido Polanco. Stanton and Kearns would each ground out to end the 1st.
The top of the 2nd wasn't much different for the Bucs, as Eovaldi would strike out Sanchez, Inge, and Cabrera in order to retire the side. Gregg Dobbs led off the bottom of the 2nd with a single, followed by a line out from Valaika. Olivo would then single, advancing Dobbs to second. Hechavarria would then ground into a double play to end the inning.
Eovaldi would continue to make the Pirates look foolish in the top of the 3rd, striking out McKenry, Barmes, and Liriano in 1-2-3 fashion. In the bottom of the 3rd, Juan Pierre hit a one out single, then taking second with Polanco up to bat. Polanco then singled, scoring Pierre to give the Marlins an early 1-0 lead.
The 4th, 5th, and 6th innings were quiet offensively, as Liriano and Eovaldi continued to rack up the strikeouts. In the top of the 7th inning, with the Marlins still up 1-0, Jose Tabata led off with a single, then stealing second with Garrett Jones batting. After Jones struck out, Gaby Sanchez followed with a strike out of his own. With two outs, Brandon Inge singled up the middle, scoring Tabata to tie the game at one.
With the game tied heading into the 9th, Jose Tabata again led off with a single, with a familiar steal of second base. Garrett Jones followed with a single of his own, putting runners on first and third. With one out, Brandon Inge hit a sac fly, scoring Tabata to give the Pirates a 2-1 lead. Asdrubal Cabrera followed with a single, followed by a Michael McKenry single to load the bases. Clint Barmes then came up with a big hit, singling to center, scoring Jones to give the Pirates a 3-1 lead.
The Pirates would take their 3-1 lead into the bottom of the 9th, calling upon Jason Grilli to close the door. After allowing a leadoff double to Kotchman, Grilli got Brantly to fly out, Hechavarria to strike out, and Solano to fly out to end the game and give the Pirates their fifth straight victory.
Player of the Game
With a sweep of the Marlins, the Pirates head back home 20 games above .500. Their first test back will be against the St. Louis Cardinals, as the Red Birds attempt to claw their way back into the race.
