One For the Ages: World Series Heads Back to Pittsburgh With Bucs Dramatic Game 5 Victory

ST. PETERSBURG - The Pittsburgh press has been somewhat quiet since the Pirates won game one of the World Series, only to go on and lose the next three. One should remember, the Pirates were down 3-1 in the NLCS against the Nationals, only to storm back and take the Nationals by surprise for their first World Series bid in over three decades. The Rays would be sending staff ace David Price to the mound, looking to secure a World Series victory. But the Pirates would counter with a lefty ace of their own in Francisco Liriano.

Game 5 started off in dramatic fashion, as Starling Marte hit a double off of David Price, only to be called out at third by mere inches, attempting to stretch the double into a triple. After replay review, it was clearly seen that Marte had blown through the stop sign put up by Nick Leyva, causing the first out of the game.

After the out, Price would get Neil Walker to strike out and Andrew McCutchen to ground out to end the top half of the inning. Francisco Liriano would make quick work of Jason Bourgeois and Yuniel Escobar in the bottom of the 1st, but would then walk Evan Longoria. Matt Joyce would then strike out to end the inning.

In the top of the 2nd, after Pedro Alvarez had grounded out and Russell Martin had popped out, Garrett Jones hit a solo home run to left field, giving the Pirates a 1-0 lead.

After the side was retired following the home run, Victor Martinez lead off the bottom of the 2nd with a single, but would be stranded as Zobrist and Jennings struck out, followed by a fly out from Brian Roberts to end the inning. The 3rd and 4th innings flew by, as neither team was able to get an offensive momentum.

In the top of the 5th inning, Marlon Byrd would hit his first home run of the series, the second off Price in the game, giving the Pirates a 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the 5th, after Desmond Jennings struck out, Brian Roberts singled to center field, putting a runner on with only one away. Ryan Doumit would then strike out for the second out of the inning. Jason Bourgeois would keep the inning alive with a single, putting runners on first and third with two away. Yuniel Escobar would then hit a single to center field that would deflect off of Andrew McCutchen, allowing Roberts to score and put the Rays on the board, cutting the Pirates lead to one.

David Price made quick work of the Pirates in the 6th, keeping the Rays deficit only to one heading into the bottom of the inning. In the bottom of the 6th, the Rays dealt the biggest blow of the game thus far, as Desmond Jennings doubled to right, scoring Joyce, Martinez, and Zobrist to give the Rays a 5-2 lead.

Pitching took over once again, as David Price continued to dominate the Bucs and the Bucs bullpen kept the Rays off the board. In the top of the 9th, the most questionable move of the game came, as skipper Joe Madden decided to take out David Price with a pitch count only in the 80's. Fernando Rodney took the mound looking to close out the game and the World Series, but would be welcomed with a rude surprise.

Starling Marte greeted Rodney with a double to lead off the inning and would advance to third on a ground out by Neil Walker. Andrew McCutchen would then hit a two-run home run to bring the Pirates within a one run striking distance.

Pedro Alvarez stepped up to the plate following the home run and delivered the biggest hit of the series, a solo shot of his own to tie the game at five.

The Pirates were able to keep the Rays off the board in the bottom of the 9th, sending the game into extra innings. In the top of the 10th, Marlon Byrd led off with a single, then advancing to second on a sacrifice by Asdrubal Cabrera. Travis Snider then grounded out, advancing Byrd to third. Starling Marte then doubled, scoring Byrd to give the Pirates a 6-5 lead.

Jason Grilli came on looking to save the game for the Bucs and send the World Series back to Pittsburgh. After getting Matt Joyce to ground out, Victor Martinez then singled to center. Ben Zobrist then walked, putting two on with one out. After Desmond Jennings reached on a fielder's choice, Brian Roberts hit a ground rule double, scoring Martinez to tie the game at six. The Pirates lucked out it was a ground rule double, because if it wouldn't have been, the Rays would've been celebrating a World Series victory.

After intentionally walking Ryan Doumit with runners on second and third with two outs, Jason Bourgeois flied out to end the inning. After a quick and silent 11th inning, Asdrubal Cabrera hit a one out solo home run to put the Pirates back on top 7-6.

Mark Melancon would then shut the door on the Rays in the bottom of the 12th, getting Martinez to ground out, Zobrist to strike out, and Jennings to ground out to end the game and send the World Series back to Pittsburgh.
