CLEAR THE DECK: Martin's Walk-Off Home Run Sends Bucs to Game 1 Win
PITTSBURGH - The Pirates haven't experienced the postseason since 1992. That's 21 years. 21 years too long. With the excitement of their first NL Central crown, the Pirates welcomed an electric, sellout crowd to PNC Park to kick off the National League Divisional Series against the Dodgers.
As A.J. Burnett took the mound for the Pirates, a deafening "Let's Go Bucs" chant could be heard across the stadium. With the adrenaline pumping, Burnett through a first pitch strike to kick off the series.
After retiring Hanley Ramirez on three pitches, Burnett walked a patient Mark Ellis. Trouble quickly found Burnett as Adrian Gonzalez doubled on the second pitch he saw, scoring Ellis to give the Dodgers a 1-0 lead.
Burnett wouldn't let the early run phase him, as he'd get big strikeouts from Matt Kemp and Andre Ethier to end the Dodgers half of the inning.
Taking the mound for the Dodgers, lefty phenom Clayton Kershaw. Kershaw made quick work of Starling Marte and Neil Walker to lead off the inning, but would then allow a triple to Andrew McCutchen to give the Bucs a runner in scoring position. Pedro Alvarez would step in with two away and would strike out, but would reach first as the ball got away from Carlos Ruiz, giving the Pirates two base runners. Unfortunately, Garrett Jones would ground out to Adrian Gonzalez to end the inning.
Burnett was able to make quick work of the Dodgers in the top of the 2nd, getting Ruiz to ground out, Puig to pop out, and Juan Uribe to strike out. Kershaw would match Burnett in the bottom of the 2nd, only allowing a single to Asdrubal Cabrera, which was deflected off of Mark Ellis. Kershaw would strike out A.J. Burnett to end the inning.
After allowing a single to Clayton Kershaw to lead off the 3rd, Burnett would get Ramirez, Ellis, and Gonzalez to strike out in order. Burnett and Kershaw would continue their pitchers dual into the top of the 6th inning, when Adrian Gonzalez hit a solo shot to center field, giving the Dodgers a 2-0 lead.
Clint Hurdle decided to pinch hit for Burnett in the bottom of the 7th, ending the aces day. Burnett finished with a strong seven innings of two run ball; but in line to take the loss. After a scoreless 8th from Chris Leroux, Kershaw was able to get Neil Walker and Andrew McCutchen to fly out for a quick two outs. But Pedro Alvarez would then double, followed by a single from Garrett Jones to give the Pirates two on with two outs. Manager Don Mattingly would make the call to the bullpen, bringing in Kenley Jansen, who would get Marlon Byrd to ground out to end the Pirates half of the 8th.
With the Pirates down to their final three outs and facing Dodgers closer Brandon League, fans were glued to the edge of their seats. Russell Martin lead off the inning with a single and would be the tying run, as Asdrubal Cabrera hit a two-run bomb to right field, tying the game at 2.
Bullpens would keep the game at two into the bottom of the 11th, when Russell Martin led off with a solo, walk-off home run to give the Pirates the NLDS game 1 victory.
After a thrilling walk-off win in game one, the Pirates will host the Dodgers for game two of the best of five NLDS, as Wandy Rodriguez opposes Zack Greinke. First pitch, 7:05PM.
