Tabata's RBI Double in 12th Snaps Losing Streak, Sends Pirates to 5-2 Win

ST. LOUIS - The Pirates entered the weekend series with the Cardinals on a five game losing streak, in the midst of a potential playoff run. Luckily for the Pirates, the Cardinals and Reds beat up on each other up in Cincinnati, leaving the Pirates NL Central lead at five games. Looking to get the Pirates back on track, Gerrit Cole took the mound to oppose St. Louis ace Adam Wainwright.

The Pirates got to Adam Wainwright right away, as Starling Marte walked to lead off the game. Neil Walker followed with a single, putting two on with no out. Wainwright would then show why he's the staff ace, as he struck out Andrew McCutchen and Pedro Alvarez on six pitches, followed by a fly out from Marlon Byrd to end the top half of the inning. Gerrit Cole was more efficient in the bottom of the 1st, as he'd get Dee Gordon to line out, followed by strike outs to Jon Jay and Allen Craig to end the inning.

Gerrit Cole would keep the Cards hitless through three, until Dee Gordon grounded a ball that deflected off of Cole for a single. Gordon then reached third on a throwing error by Cole with no one out.

Cole, however, would then get Jon Jay to pop out, followed by strikeouts of Allen Craig and Matt Holliday to end the inning. In the top of the 5th inning, Russell Martin took the first pitch he saw out of the ball park for a solo home run, giving the Pirates a 1-0 lead.

After an Asdrubal Cabrera line out, Adam Wainwright took out some frustrations, as he hit Gerrit Cole square in the back, getting the benches to clear. After restoring order to the game, Wainwright would come back strong and get Marte to strike out and Andrew McCutchen to fly out to end the inning. With the thought of Cole being hit on his mind, Pedro Alvarez took matters in to his own hands, hitting a solo shot to lead off the 6th, giving the Pirates a 2-0 lead.

Michael Bourn tripled to lead off the bottom of the 6th and then scored on a double from Dee Gordon, cutting the Pirates lead to 2-1.

After Gordon reached third on a fly out by Jon Jay, Allen Craig hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Gordon, tying the game at two. After the Pirates couldn't manage to score in the top of the 9th, the Cardinals looked to end the game in walk-off fashion. Allen Craig doubled off of Duke Welker to lead off the bottom of the 9th, immediately getting Clint Hurdle to call upon Jason Grilli. Grilli would get Holliday to strike out, but would then allow a single to Yadier Molina, putting runners on first and third with only one away. Rafael Furcal then came on to pinch run for Molina, only to be caught stealing second for the second out.

Grilli would then get David Freese to fly out to end the inning and send the game to extras. The bullpens would duke it out until the top of the 12th, when Pedro Alvarez doubled to center with two outs. Pinch hitter Jose Tabata then became the hero, as he doubled to center field, scoring Alvarez, giving the Pirates a 3-2 lead.

With a lefty pitching, Clint Hurdle decided to give Garrett Jones a rest and pinch hit Gaby Sanchez. Sanchez then made Hurdle look like a genius, as he hit a two-run shot to right, giving the Pirates a 5-2 lead.

Jeanmar Gomez came on to pitch the bottom of the 12th. After gettin Vazquez to strike out, David Freese singled to right. Gomez then got Carlos Beltran to single, but would allow a single to Gast putting two on. Daniel Descalso then lined out to end the game and send the Pirates to victory.

Player of the Game

Looking to extend their lead in the NL Central, the Pirates send A.J. Burnett to the mound to oppose Lance Lynn. First pitch, 7:15PM.
