Burnett Bests Gallardo as Pirates Win Fourth Straight
PITTSBURGH - After an up and down road trip, the Pirates took PNC Park on a three game winning streak. With the end of August only days away, the city of Pittsburgh is buzzing with Pirates fans. Talks of a playoff appearance are starting to heat up, as the city of Champions looks to add the Pirates to the mix. The Pirates have a crucial six game home stand, starting with three against the Brewers, before welcoming their bitter rival, the St. Louis Cardinals. Taking the mound in game one of the three game set, is A.J. Burnett for the Pirates and Yovani Gallardo for the Brewers - a pitchers dual none the less.
In the top of the 1st inning, Burnett was able to make quick outs of Aoki and Segura, but would allow a single from Ryan Braun. Matt Gamel followed suit of his own, singling to center, putting two on with two out. But former Bucco Aramis Ramirez would ground out to end the top half of the inning. Gallardo made quick work of the Bucs in the bottom of the 1st, getting Marte, Tabata, and McCutchen to pop out to end the inning.
In the bottom of the 2nd, Pedro Alvarez flew out to lead off, followed by a ground out from Garrett Jones for a quick two outs. But Russell Martin would hit a solo shot on the first pitch he saw, putting the Pirates ahead 1-0.
Burnett ran into some trouble in the top of the 3rd, as Aoki singled to lead off the inning. As Jean Segura struck out, Aoki stole second to get into scoring position. Burnett would then strike out Ryan Braun and Matt Gamel to end the Brewers half of the inning. After a quick 4th inning, the Pirates made some noise in the bottom of the 5th. Russell Martin doubled with one out and then advanced to third on a ground out from Neil Walker. Asdrubal Cabrera followed with a walk, but both runners would be stranded as Burnett popped up to end the 5th.
Burnett continued to battle through the 6th and 7th innings, striking out batters with runners in scoring position. After Duke Welker pitched a scoreless 8th, Jason Grilli came on for the save opportunity in the 9th. After getting Aramis Ramirez to ground out, Jonathan Lucroy singled to center, but was caught stealing with Betancourt batting. With the bases cleared, Betancourt doubled to right with two away. Grilli would then get Carlos Gomez to fly out at the wall, what was almost certainly the tying run.
With the win, A.J. Burnett collected his 149th career victory. With the save, Jason Grilli collected his 45th save of the season, one away from tying the Pirates save record, held by Mike Williams in 2002 (46 saves).
Player of the Game
The Pirates look to extend their winning streak tomorrow evening, as Wandy Rodriguez opposes Mark Rogers. First pitch, 7:05PM.
