All Aboard the Cole Train: Cole's Complete Game Shut-Out Sends Pirates to Series Victory

SAN FRANCISCO - After looking like they were going to be in some trouble, the Pirates have taken two out of three from San Francisco and look to take the series this afternoon. The Pirates hope to get a win from rookie Gerrit Cole, as they have an off day to regroup tomorrow. Barry Zito will take the mound for the Giants to oppose Cole.

In the top of the 1st inning, a returning Starling Marte made an immediate impact, single to center. Jose Tabata followed in suite, singling to right, advancing Marte to third, but being called out at second trying to stretch out the single to a double. Andrew McCutchen then hit a sac fly to right which scored Marte, giving the Pirates a 1-0 lead.

Pedro Alvarez flew out at the warning track to end the top half of the inning. The bottom of the 1st went by quickly for Cole , as he would get Angel Pagan to ground out and Brandon Belt and Buster Posey to strike out to end the inning.

In the bottom of the 2nd inning, Pablo Sandoval reached first base on a defensive error by Gerrit Cole; however, it was ruled a single. Cole would then strike out Hunter Pence and get Brandon Crawford to ground into a double play to end the 2nd. The 3rd and 4th innings went by quickly, as neither team made an offensive noise. In the top of the 5th inning, Neil Walker led off with a single, followed by a single from Asdrubal Cabrera, which advanced Walker to 3rd. Michael McKenry then grounded out, scoring Walker to give the Pirates a 2-0 lead.

Gerrit Cole continued to cruise, as did the Giants bullpen. After a quick top of the 9th, Gerrit Cole took the mound to finish off the game. Cole would strike out Brandon Belt, get Buster Posey to ground out, and then strike out Pablo Sandoval on a swinging third strike to end the game.
