Offense Stays Hot as Liriano Dominates Giants in 4-1 Win

SAN FRANCISCO - Andrew McCutchen knew something had to be done to get the Pirates back to their winning ways. Like any true MVP, McCutchen shouldered the Pirates in their 4-3 win against the Giants last night, as he hit the go ahead two-run shot in the top of the 9th. As the offense looked to carry over in today's game, Francisco Liriano looked to keep the pitching staff together, as he took the mound to oppose former Bucco Ryan Vogelsong.

The Pirates got going early again in this one, as Neil Walker tripled with one out in the top of the 1st. Andrew McCutchen then grounded out to first, but that would allow Walker to score, giving the Bucs an early 1-0 lead.

As Liriano was dealing defensively, the Pirates continued to ambush Vogelsong in the top of the 3rd, as Jose Tabata tripled with one away. Neil Walker then hit a sac fly to center, scoring Tabata to push the Pirates ahead 2-0. After Andrew McCutchen singled and stole second, Garrett Jones crushed a two-run home run to right field, putting the Pirates ahead 4-0.

Liriano kept the Giants hitless until a Pablo Sandoval single in the bottom of the 4th, followed by a single from Joaquin Arias. But a Brandon Belt ground out would end the Giants threat and the inning. With the game still at 4-0 heading into the bottom of the 6th, Angel Pagan reached first on a throwing error to lead off the inning. Perez then singled, advancing Pagan to second. Bustery Posey then singled to right, scoring Pagan, cutting the Pirates lead to three.

The Giants were able to get some men on base, but were unable to come up with any big hits to get runs on the board. After a scoreless top of the 9th, Jason Grilli was called upon to close the door in the bottom of the 9th with a three run lead. Grilli would strike out Hunter Pence to lead off the inning, but would allow a single to pinch hitter Gregor Blanco. With two outs, Perez singled, putting runners at first and second. But Grilli would dig deep in the tank and fan Buster Posey on a 3 pitch strikeout to end the game and send the Pirates to their second straight victory.

Player of the Game

After taking a 2-1 series lead, the Pirates and Giants square off in the series and season matchup finale tomorrow afternoon, as Gerrit Cole takes the mound to oppose Barry Zito. First pitch, 4:05PM.
