MVP: McCutchen's Two Home Runs Send Pirates to Wild Win

SAN FRANCISCO - The Pirates continued to struggle on their west coast trip, as they lost their fourth straight game and also kept their scoreless streak at 33 innings. With the recent loses, the Reds and Cardinals are starting to gain some ground in the NL Central. Hoping to get the Pirates back on track, James McDonald took the mound to oppose Tim Lincecum.

Tim Lincecum made quick work of Jose Tabata and Andrew Lambo in the top of the 1st inning, but made a big mistake to Andrew McCutchen, leaving a fastball right down the heart of the plate. McCutchen smothered the ball to left field, ending the Pirates scoreless streak and giving the Bucs a 1-0 lead.

Garrett Jones and Russell Martin each followed with singles, but an Asdrubal Cabrera ground out ended the threat. In the bottom of the 1st, Angel Pagan led off with a single, followed by a single from Marco Scutaro. After a Pablo Sandoval strike out, Hunter Pence singled to load the bases. James McDonald would get out of the jam, however, as he'd get Belt and Sanchez to ground out to end the inning.

In the top of the 3rd inning, Jose Tabata led off with a single and then stole second with Lambo batting. Andrew Lambo then singled, advancing Tabata to third. Andrew McCutchen's sac fly then scored Tabata, giving the Pirates a 2-0 lead. Unfortunately, after a Garrett Jones single, Russell Martin would ground into a double play to end the top half of the inning. After two quick strikeouts of Pagan and Scutaro in the bottom of the third, Pablo Sandoval singled and then scored on a two-run shot from Hunter Pence, tying the game at two.

Pitching took over until the bottom of the 6th, when Brandon Crawford singled with two outs. Perez then doubled, scoring Crawford, putting the Giants ahead 3-2.

Up by a run in the top of the 9th, Sergio Romo came on to close the door on the Pirates, looking to send the Pirates to their fifth straight loss. After striking out a pinch hitting Neil Walker, Jose Tabata singled, then being called out on a fielder's choice by Andrew Lambo. With two away and a 2-2 count, Andrew McCutchen crushed a ball to left field, giving the Pirates a 4-3 lead.

Jason Grilli came on for the save in the bottom of the 9th. Grilli would get Posey to ground out, Blanco to strike out, and Pagan to ground out to end the game and send the Pirates to victory.

Player of the Game

After snapping their four game losing streak, the Pirates look to make it a two game winning streak, as Francisco Liriano takes the mound against former Pirate Ryan Vogelsong. First pitch, 9:05PM.
