Bumgarner Masterful in Complete Game Shut-Out

SAN FRANCISCO - Ever since the Pirates drubbed the Cardinals 6-1 on August 13, the offense has basically disappeared. Since that game against the Cardinals, the Pirates have gone 1-7 and haven't scored a run for 24 innings. When manager Clint Hurdle was asked what was going on with his ball club, he simply replied, "We're in a funk. Every team goes through them". Unfortunately, for Hurdle's club, they're slumping at the wrong time, as a once large NL Central lead is quickly diminishing. After getting swept my the Padres, the Pirates face a daunting task against the defending World Champion San Francisco Giants. Game one is a battle of lefties, as Wandy Rodriguez opposes Madison Bumgarner.

Bumgarner and Rodriguez matched each other out for out in the 1st, each retiring the side in order. In the top of the 2nd, Russell Martin broke the Bucs into the hit column with a two out single. Matt LaPorta followed with a single of his own, putting two on with two out. Clint Barmes would then ground out to end the threat and the top half of the inning. In the bottom of the 2nd, with one away, Joaquin Arias doubled, but would be stranded at second as Belt and Scutaro flew out to end the inning.

The pitchers dual would continue until the bottom of the 6th inning, when Hunter Pence hit a solo home run to left, giving the Giants a one run lead.

The Pirates had gone after Pence at the trade deadline and sure wish that home run would've been from their end. Wandy Rodriguez would bounce back after the homer, getting Bumgarner, Pagan, and Perez to strike out in order.

After Bumgarner made quick work of the Bucs in the 7th, Arias again doubled, this time with two away, in the bottom of the 7th. Brandon Belt then hit a two-run shot to right, putting the Giants ahead 3-0.

Brian Morris came in to pitch for Rodriguez in the top of the 8th, immediately striking out Hunter Pence. Morris then caused the Giants bench to brew, as he hit Bumgarner with a 95MPH fastball in the shoulder. Angel Pagan would then reach on a fielders choice, followed by a single from Perez to put two on with two away. Morris would then get Buster Posey to ground out to end the inning. Down to their final three outs, Andrew McCutchen doubled with one away, and then advanced to third on a ground out by Garrett Jones. Pedro Alvarez stepped in looking to get the Pirates on the board, but would ground out to end the game and push the scoreless streak to 33 innings and the losing streak to 4 games.

Player of the Game

After dropping their fourth straight, the Pirates look to bounce back in game two against the Giants, as they send James McDonald to the mound to oppose Tim Lincecum. First pitch, 10:15PM.
