Burnett's One Hit Shut-out Goes for Naught as Pirates Get Swept by Padres in Extras

SAN DIEGO - The first two games of this three game set, each won by the Padres, have been straight up pitchers duals. Game one featured Chase Headley taking over the game for the Padres, scoring both runs. Game two was lost in the 1st inning, as Gerrit Cole would allow his only run, en route to another Padres victory. The Pirates offense has been shut down, only able to score one run in the first game of the series. If the pitching continues the way it has, the Pirates have every chance to win, if they can only get their offense going. The Bucs send A.J. Burnett to the mound to oppose Andrew Cashner, as they look to avoid the series sweep.

In the top of the 1st inning, after an Andrew Lambo line out, Asdrubal Cabrera singled. Cashner would get McCutchen to strike out and Headley to ground out to end the inning. Burnett returned the favor in the bottom of the 1st, getting Denorfia to ground out, Alonso to strike out, and Headley to line out to end the inning.

Cashner would strike out the Pirates in order in the top of the 2nd. In the bottom of the 2nd, Burnett walked Jimmy Rollins to lead off. Will Venable would then fly out, followed by fly outs from Guzman and Gyorko to end the inning. In the top of the 4th, with one away, Andrew McCutchen singled and then stole second. But Pedro Alvarez would pop out and Garrett Jones would strike out to end the top half of the inning.

Neither team could muster any offense and the Padres were unable to get a hit until the bottom of the 7th, when Will Venable hit a bunt single with two away.

Venable would be stranded at first, as Guzman grounded out to end the inning. As pitching continued to dominate the game, nine innings wouldn't be enough to decide a winner. In the top of the 10th inning, Garrett Jones singled after McCutchen and Alvarez struck out. Recent call-up Matt LaPorta would fly out at the warning track to end the top half of the inning.

In the bottom of the 10th, Mark Melancon came on to pitch and immediately got into trouble. Will Venable led off with a single. Guzman then hit a bunt single, putting two on with no outs. After Gyorko flew out, Yasmani Grandal singled to load the bases. Travis Buck, pinch hitting for the pitcher, would hit a sac fly to deep left field, scoring Venable to give the Padres the 1-0 walk off win.

Player of the Game

After getting swept in San Diego, the Pirates continue their seven game round trip, as they had to San Francisco for a four game series with the Giants. Game one has Wandy Rodriguez opposing Madison Bumgarner. First pitch, 10:15PM.
