Luebke Shuts Down Pirates as Free Fall Continues

SAN DIEGO - Coming into tonight's game, the Pirates have lost 11 of their last 18 games. Fans are beginning to lose faith in this team, as they continue to mock their 2012 collapse. Hoping to get back on track, the Pirates sent their rookie ace, Gerrit Cole to the mound, to oppose Cory Luebke in game two of this three game series.

Jose Tabata brought a glimpse of hope to the offense in the top of the 1st, as he led off with a single to left field. Unfortunately, Asdrubal Cabrera would ground into a double play for a quick two outs. Andrew McCutchen followed with a single, only to be stranded at first as Pedro Alvarez struck out to end the inning. In the bottom of the 1st, after a ground out by Denorfia, Alonso singled to right. Alonso would then reach second on a wild pitch. Chase Headley then singled, advancing Alonso to third with only one away. Yasmani Grandal then hit a sac fly to left, allowing Alonso to score the first run of the game, putting the Padres up 1-0.

Matt LaPorta would single to left to lead off the top of the 2nd inning, only to be stranded as Martin flew out, Walker struck out, and Sands popped out to end the top half of the inning. Gerrit Cole would make quick work of the Friars in the bottom of the second, retiring the side in order. Cole and Luebke would battle back and forth until the top of the 6th, when Jose Tabata hit a one out single. Asdrubal Cabrera followed with a single of his own, putting men on first and second with only one out. But, as has been the case recently, Luebke would strike out Andrew McCutchen and Pedro Alvarez to end the inning.

In the bottom of the 8th, after Glen Perkins struck out Alonso and Headley, Grandal doubled to center, followed by a single from Jimmy Rollins to put both runners in scoring position. Perkins would get out of the jam, striking out Will Venable to end the 8th.

Down to their final three outs, Asdrubal Cabrera led off the top of the 9th with a single, but would be thrown out as a part of an Andrew McCutchen double play. Pedro Alvarez gave the Pirates their last spark, doubling to right with two away. But a pinch hitting Garrett Jones would strike out to end the game.

Player of the Game

With the losses starting to pile up and the Padres looking to sweep, the Pirates send A.J. Burnett to the mound to oppose Andrew Cashner. First pitch, 6:35PM.
