Walker's Error Proves Costly as Offense Continues to Struggle in Loss

SAN DIEGO - After nearly getting swept by the Diamondbacks at home, the Pirates traveled to the usually unfriendly west coast, opening a seven game road trip, starting with three against the San Diego Padres. As wins are usually hard to come by for the Pirates at PETCO, Clint Hurdle would send lefty Francisco Liriano to the mound, to oppose Eric Stults.

After a quick top of the 1st from Eric Stults, the Padres got the wheels moving in the bottom of the 1st. With one away, Yonder Alonso reached first on a fielding error by Neil Walker.

Chase Headley then doubled to left, scoring Alonso, giving the Padres a 1-0 lead.

Liriano would get Grandal to strike out to end the inning. Stults and Liriano each retired the side in order in the 2nd. In the top of the 3rd, Jerry Sands led off with a single to right, followed by a single from Gaby Sanchez to put two on with no outs. Liriano then sacrificed to advance the runners to second and third with only one away. Jose Tabata then grounded out to Jimmy Rollins, which scored Sands to tie the game at one.

After the Pirates were again sat down in order in the top of the 4th, Chase Headley led off the bottom of the 4th with a solo home run, giving the Padres a 2-1 lead.

The Pirates would make some noise in the 7th, as Pedro Alvarez led off with a single. After Thayer retired Martin and Walker on strikeouts, Jerry Sands singled to put runners on first and second with two away. Gaby Sanchez then singled to load the bases. With a low pitch count and looking to give the bullpen some rest, Hurdle decided to leave Liriano in to bat. Liriano was able to work the count to 3-2, only to fly out to end the inning.

Huston Street would come on in the 9th, looking to seal the victory for the Padres. After getting Martin and Walker to ground out, Street would strike out a pinch hitting Andrew McCutchen to end the game.

Player of the Game

After dropping game one of the series, the Pirates will turn to Gerrit Cole to get them back in the win column, as he opposes Cory Luebke. First pitch, 10:05PM.
