Pirates Drop Fourth Straight as Offense Fizzels Against D-Backs

PITTSBURGH - After dropping a pitchers dual in extra innings last night, the Pirates looked to rebound against the Diamondbacks. Once again, the pitching matchup looked to be another pitchers dual, as Wandy Rodriguez took the mound to oppose Brandon McCarthy.

In the top of the 1st inning, Rodriguez made quick work of Martin Prado, getting him to pop out in foul territory. But the wheels started to come off for Wandy, as Adam Eaton hit a bunt single, followed by a single from Paul Goldschmidt to put two on with only one away. Alex Rios then singled, scoring Eaton to give the Diamondbacks a 1-0 lead.

Cody Ross then singled to left, loading the bases with still only one out. Rodriguez would then get JJ Hardy to strike out after a nine pitch at bat, followed by a ground out from Hill to end the top half of the inning. Andrew Lambo would lead off the bottom of the 1st with a single, but would then get called out at second on a fielder's choice by Andrew McCutchen. Cutch would steal second with Gaby Sanchez batting, but it would be for naught as Sanchez struck out to end the inning.

After a quick top of the 2nd, Jerry Sands singled with one out in the bottom of the 2nd, then scoring on an RBI double from Tony Sanchez to tie the game at one.

Neither team would be able to get a runner past second base, that is until Cody Ross hit a solo shot to center field in the top of the 6th, giving the Diamondbacks a 2-1 lead.

Pitching would again be the story in this one, as the bullpens took over for the starters, keeping the Diamondbacks up 2-1 heading into the bottom of the 9th. Brandon Inge led off the bottom of the 9th with a single, then was sacrficed to second by Jerry Sands. Russell Martin, pinch hitting for Sanchez, grounded out to Hardy, advancing Inge to third with two away. J.J. Putz would then get Asdrubal Cabrera to strike out swinging to end the game and send the Pirates to their fourth straight loss.

Player of the Game

With the Diamondbacks having the series in hand, the Pirates look to salvage game three of the series and avoid the sweep. James McDonald will take the mound to oppose Ian Kennedy. First pitch, 1:35PM.
