Burnett Continues to Struggle as Pirates Drop Series to Rockies

PITTSBURGH - Game number 111. Just another game... or is it? Pittsburghers can tell you all about game number 111 in 2012...... it was the beginning of the Pirates historic collapse. Coming into this years game, the Pirates, 22 games above .500, looked to change their fortunes. Taking the mound for the Bucco's, a struggling A.J. Burnett to oppose Jose Fernandez.

The top of the 1st was pretty routine for Burnett, as he'd get Pacheco to ground out, Fowler to fly out, and Tulowitzki to strike out looking for a quick 1-2-3 inning. In the bottom of the 1st, after a ground out from Tabata and a strike out from Walker, Pedro Alvarez singled to right field. Unfortunately, Garrett Jones would strike out to end the inning.

In the top of the 2nd, Carlos Gonzalez grounded out to lead off the inning. James Loney then singled to recently acquired Peter Bourjos, who was playing center field as Andrew McCutchen got a days rest. But McCutchen's day off with quickly come to an end, as Bourjos had to leave the game with a shoulder injury.

Following the injury, Burnett would get Cuddyer and Rosario to ground out to end the inning. Jose Fernandez would again make quick work of the Bucs in the bottom of the 2nd, retiring the side in order. Fernandez would look to help his own cause in the bottom of the 3rd, singling with one out. With two outs, Dexter Fowler reached on a throwing error by Neil Walker, advancing Fernandez to third. Troy Tulowitzki then doubled to deep center, scoring Fernandez and Fowler to give the Rockies a 2-0 lead.

After a scoreless 5th inning the Rockies got back to work in the top of the 5th, as Herrera would single to lead off the inning and then be sacrificed to second by Fernandez. Jordan Pacheco then singled, scoring Herrera to push the Rockies lead to 3-0.

Fernandez continued to dominate the Pirates into the 7th, until Andrew McCutchen led off with a solo shot, putting the Bucs on the board.

With Duke Welker pitching in the 9th, James Loney would get a run back for the Rockies, hit a lead off homer to extend the lead to 4-1. After retiring the side, the Pirates were down to their last three outs, as Fernandez would look for the complete game. But Garrett Jones had other thoughts as he led off with a solo shot of his own, biring the Bucs back to within two.

But Rockies closer Rafael Betancourt would come in and shut the door on the Bucs, giving the Rockies two out of three at PNC.

Player of the Game

With a day off on Monday, the Pirates welcome the Marlins for a three game set starting on Tuesday, the last three games of this eleven game home stand. The pitching matchup in game one features Wandy Rodriguez against Jacob Turner. First pitch, 7:05PM.
