Cole Continues Dominance as Martin's Solo Shot Lifts Bucs Past Rox

PITTSBURGH - The Pittsburgh Pirates were flat out dominated in last nights game, as a well pitched game by Jhoulys Chacin and two costly errors ground the Bucs. Looking to get back to winning ways, the Pirates would have to get to a staunch lefty in Jorge De La Rosa, but would counter with rookie Gerrit Cole.

In the top of the 1st inning, with one out recorded, Dexter Fowler hit a bunt single, followed by a swiping of second base to put him in scoring position with one out. Gerrit Cole would then strike out Tulowitzki and Gonzalez to end the top half of the inning.

De La Rosa would follow suit, getting Tabata to strike out, followed by ground outs from Cabrera and McCutchen to end the inning. The 2nd, 3rd, and 4th innings would quickly fly by, as Cole and De La Rosa retired the sides in order. After a quick top half of the 5th, Neil Walker would get the Bucs in the hit column, singling to left. After a Gaby Sanchez fly out, Brandon Inge singled to right, putting runners on first and second with two outs. De La Rosa would get his counterpart swinging on three pitches to end the inning.

Strikeouts continued to pile up in the 6th and the top of the 7th, as neither team had yet to crack the run column. In the bottom of the 7th, Russell Martin came up big again, crushing a solo shot to left center field, giving the Pirates a 1-0 lead.

In the top of the 8th inning, James Loney led off with a single. After getting Michael Cuddyer to ground out, Cole would strike out Nelson for the second out. Cole then walked Rosario, putting two on with two outs. Tim Wheeler would then pinch hit for De La Rosa, only to line out to end the Rockies threat.

After missing an opportunity to add on in the 8th, Gerrit Cole trotted out in the top of the 9th, looking for a complete game victory. After allowing a lead off double to Jordan Pacheco, Clint Hurdle decided to take the youngster out of the game, leaving to a standing ovation from the PNC Park crowd.

Jason Grilli would come on in a big spot, only to strike out Fowler and Tulowitzki. After a 3-1 walk to Gonzalez, Grilli would get Todd Helton to fly out to end the game, sealing Grilli's 40th save and a Pirates victory.

Gerrit Cole is on fire. If he keeps this up and I make the playoffs, I may just have a rookie #1 in the rotation!

As far as Jose, it was a trade earlier in the year. I have it posted somewhere, just have to look through the posts!
