Chacin, Rockies Cool Down Pirates in 3-1 Win

PITTSBURGH- A ten game home stand was more than welcomed by the Pirates, as their hunt to break .500 continues on. After taking three of four from the Cardinals, the Pirates welcomed the Rockies to PNC Park. Game one of the three game weekend series would feature Francisco Liriano against Jhoulys Chacin.

After earning a no decision in his previous start, Liriano looked to come back strong against the Rockies. After allowing a lead off single to Pacheco, Liriano got Dexter Fowler to ground into a double play, followed by a strike out of Troy Tulowitzki to end the top half of the inning. The bottom of the 1st would go in favor of Chacin, as he would get Ford to fly out, Cabrera to strike out, and McCutchen to line out to end the inning.

In the top of the 2nd, Carlos Gonzalez hit a single to lead off the inning, followed by a fly out from Rosario. Michael Cuddyer would then ground into a double play, the second DP in two innings.

Garrett Jones singled with one out in the bottom of the 2nd. Travis Snider would then walk with two outs, putting two on with two out. But Chacin would get Russell Martin to ground out to end the threat. With one out in the top of the 3rd, James Loney doubled, followed by a walk issued to Jhoulys Chacin, putting runners on first and second with one out. Liriano would then get Pacheco to fly out and Fowler to ground out to end the top half of the inning.

Liriano and Chacin would continue to dominate, keeping the game scoreless through five innings. In the top of the 6th, Chacin would lead off with a single, followed by a strikeout of Pacheco. Dexter Fowler would strike out for the second out of the inning. With two outs, Tulowitzki then reached on a throwing error, loading the bases. Carlos Gonzalez then singled, scoring Chacin and Tulowitzki to give the Rockies a 2-0 lead.

After a scoreless bottom of the 6th from the Pirates, Michael Cuddyer hit a lead off solo shot in the top of the 7th, pushing the Rockies lead to 3-0.

Glen Perkins, making his Bucco's debut in the top of the 8th, got off to a rough start. After walking Pacheco on six pitches, Fowler singled putting two on with no outs. Troy Tulowitzki then singled to load the bases. After a visit from pitching coach Ray Searage, Perkins settled down and struck out Gonzalez and Rosario in order.

Perkins would then get Cuddyer to line out to end the Rockies threat. The Pirates would get one last chance in the bottom of the 9th, trailing 3-0. Pedro Alvarez led off with a double, then advancing to third on a ground out by Garrett Jones. Neil Walker then hit a sac fly, scoring Alvarez, cutting the Rockies lead to two.

Chacin would then get Travis Snider to strike out on a dropped third strike, sending the Rockies to victory.
