Barmes' RBI Single Sends Pirates to Extra Innings Win

PITTSBURGH - After last seasons August collapse, Pirates fans are cautiously optimistic that this year will be different. The Pirates, however, are doing everything they can do continue this magical run. Looking to take the series from the Cardinals and further move themselves ahead in the standings, the Pirates sent James McDonald to the mound to oppose Lance Lynn.

James McDonald quickly dispatched the Cardinals in the top of the 1st inning, striking out Bourn to lead off, followed by a ground out from Jay and a strikeout by Craig to end the top half of the inning. In the bottom of the 1st, with two outs, Andrew McCutchen hit a long fly ball that looked like it would drop in for a double, only to be robbed on an incredible catch by Jon Jay to end the inning.

McDonald made a quick two outs in the top of the 2nd, followed by a walk issued to Carlos Beltran. But the walk would cause no threat, as Matt Carpenter struck out to end retire the side. Lynn would better McDonald in the bottom half of the inning, getting Alvarez to strike out, followed by fly outs from Jones and Martin.

The Pirates and Cardinals would each remain hitless until the top of the 5th, when Matt Carpenter singled with one out. The hit would go for nothing, as Gordon grounded out to end the top half of the 5th. The Pirates got into the hit column in the bottom of the 5th, as Pedro Alvarez and Garrett Jones each singled to start off the inning. But the Bucco offense couldn't produce anything from their two on with no out situation, as Lynn would get Martin and Snider to strike out, followed by a Clint Barmes fly out to end the 5th.

After a quiet 6th inning, Yadier Molina led off the 7th with a single. James McDonald would then make his first uh-oh pitch of the night, a fastball straight down the pipe that was blasted by Beltran for a two-run home run to give the Cardinals a 2-0 lead.

After Bryan Morris got the Pirates out of the 7th, Neil Walker hit a pinch hit double with one out. Jose Tabata would then ground out, keeping Walker at second. Asdrubal Cabrera then made the biggest play of the game for the Bucs, crushing a two-run shot out of PNC Park, tying the game at two.

The bullpens would go back and forth in extra innings, as the Pirates held the Cardinals scoreless through the top of the 12th. With Trevor Rosenthal on the mound for the red birds, Garrett Jones singled to lead off the bottom of the 12th, then advancing to second on a ground out by Russell Martin. After Travis Snider struck out for the second out of the inning, Clint Barmes singled up the middle, scoring Jones to give the Pirates the walk-off victory and the series win over the Cardinals.

Player of the Game

The Pirates continue their home stand tomorrow night, as the Colorado Rockies head into PNC Park. Taking the mound in game one, Francisco Liriano for the Pirates, Jhoulys Chacin for the Rockies. First pitch, 7:05PM.
