Pirates 9th Inning Rally Falls Short as Cards Prevail 4-3

PITTSBURGH -With the trade winds swirling as the trade deadline draws nears, the Pirates and Cardinals were at it again in game two of the four game set. After a dominant outing from Gerrit Cole in game one, A.J. Burnett took the mound to oppose Jake Westbrook in game two.

In the top of the 1st inning, A.J. Burnett would make quick work of Dee Gordon and Jon Jay, before issuing a walk to Allen Craig with two outs. Burnett would get Holliday to fly out to end the inning. Jake Westbrook would have an easier time with the Bucs in the bottom of the 1st, getting Tabata, Walker, and McCutchen to each ground out to end the inning.

Burnett and Westbrook would match each other out for out in the 2nd inning. The Pirates made the first bit of noise in the bottom of the 3rd, as A.J. Burnett reached on a throwing error with one away. After Jose Tabata struck out, Neil Walker singled, putting two on with two outs. Andrew McCutchen would then strike out to end the inning.

After a quick 4th inning, Burnett would strike out David Freese, before giving up a single to Carlos Beltran. After a Matt Carpenter ground out for the second out of the inning, Burnett would walk Westbrook on six pitches. Jon Jay then singled, scoring Beltran to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead.

Allen Craig followed with a bases clearing double, scoring Westbrook, Gordon, and Jay, giving pushing the Red Birds ahead 4-0.

Burnett would get Holliday to ground out to end the inning. In the bottom of the 5th, Jose Tabata singled with one out. With McCutchen at bat, Tabata stole second, then scoring on a single from McCutchen to cut the Cards lead to three.

After Burnett got the Cards in order in the top of the 6th, Pedro Alvarez doubled to deep right to lead off the bottom of the inning. After a Garrett Jones ground out, Russell Martin hit a two-run blast to pull the Pirates to within one.

The bullpens would keep the score at 4-3 heading into the bottom of the 9th, as the Pirates were looking for a walk-off win. With two outs, Gaby Sanchez hit a pinch hit single, followed by a single from Jose Tabata putting runners at first and third. Neil Walker stepped in with a chance to tie or win the game, as he worked the count to a full count. Jason Motte then reared back and threw a 98MPH fast ball to strike out Walker and send the Cardinals to victory.
