Cole Shakes Off Rough Start to Dominate Cards in 4-2 Win

PITTSBURGH - The Pirates were all smiles on the plane ride back from Miami, as a three game sweep was quite an accomplishment, regardless of the team they were facing. Awaiting them at home would be a welcomed 10 game home stand, starting off with their NL Central foe, St. Louis. The Cardinals have been scuffling as of late, but as recent history would suggest, they're not yet out.

Gerrit Cole took the mound for the Pirates, allowing two runs on four hits in his previous outing in Washington, ending in a no decision. Cole got the game started the way he likes, striking out Dee Gordon on four pitches. But things would turn sour quickly, as Cole allowed a solo jack to Jon Jay, giving the Cardinals a 1-0 lead.

Allen Craig followed the solo shot with a single, followed by a double from Matt Holliday to advance Craig to third. Yadier Molina would hit a sac fly, scoring Craig to give the Cardinals a 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the 1st, Starling Marte led off with a single, then advancing to second on a ground out from Neil Walker. Andrew McCutchen then took the first pitch he saw out of PNC Park for a two-run shot, tying the game up at two.

Cole and Kelly would battle it out and keep the lineups scoreless, as neither team was able to muster any offense until the Pirates were up in the bottom of the 5th. Travis Snider led off with a single, followed by a single from Asdrubal Cabrera to put two on with no outs. Gerrit Cole then sacrificed the runners to second and third. Jose Tabata then hit a sac fly to center, scoring Snider to break the tie and give the Pirates a 3-2 lead.

Neil Walker followed with a single of his own, scoring Asdrubal Cabrera to push the Pirates lead to 4-2. After Gerrit Cole struck out the side in the top of the 5th, he would continue his tear as he struck the side out again in the top of the 6th, keeping the Pirates lead at two. With the bullpens taking over in the final innings, Jason Grilli came on for his 38th save opportunity. Grilli would get Jay to fly out, Craig to ground out, and Holliday to fly out at the track to end the game.

Player of the Game

After taking game one of the series, the Pirates send A.J. Burnett to the mound to oppose Jake Westbrook. First pitch, 7:05PM.
