Pirates Rally Late for Sweep of Marlins

MIAMI - After coming back from an early deficit in game two of the series, the Pirates looked to get their offense going, trying to sweep the Marlins to keep their current four game winning streak alive. The Pirates would turn to Francisco Liriano to oppose Nathan Eovaldi.

The top of the 1st was a quick inning for Eovaldi, getting Marte to pop out, followed by strike outs of Tabata and Jones to end the top half of the 1st. Liriano would struck out Juan Pierre to lead off the bottom of the inning, followed by a single from Placido Polanco. Stanton and Kearns would each ground out to end the 1st.

The top of the 2nd wasn't much different for the Bucs, as Eovaldi would strike out Sanchez, Inge, and Cabrera in order to retire the side. Gregg Dobbs led off the bottom of the 2nd with a single, followed by a line out from Valaika. Olivo would then single, advancing Dobbs to second. Hechavarria would then ground into a double play to end the inning.

Eovaldi would continue to make the Pirates look foolish in the top of the 3rd, striking out McKenry, Barmes, and Liriano in 1-2-3 fashion. In the bottom of the 3rd, Juan Pierre hit a one out single, then taking second with Polanco up to bat. Polanco then singled, scoring Pierre to give the Marlins an early 1-0 lead.

The 4th, 5th, and 6th innings were quiet offensively, as Liriano and Eovaldi continued to rack up the strikeouts. In the top of the 7th inning, with the Marlins still up 1-0, Jose Tabata led off with a single, then stealing second with Garrett Jones batting. After Jones struck out, Gaby Sanchez followed with a strike out of his own. With two outs, Brandon Inge singled up the middle, scoring Tabata to tie the game at one.

With the game tied heading into the 9th, Jose Tabata again led off with a single, with a familiar steal of second base. Garrett Jones followed with a single of his own, putting runners on first and third. With one out, Brandon Inge hit a sac fly, scoring Tabata to give the Pirates a 2-1 lead. Asdrubal Cabrera followed with a single, followed by a Michael McKenry single to load the bases. Clint Barmes then came up with a big hit, singling to center, scoring Jones to give the Pirates a 3-1 lead.

The Pirates would take their 3-1 lead into the bottom of the 9th, calling upon Jason Grilli to close the door. After allowing a leadoff double to Kotchman, Grilli got Brantly to fly out, Hechavarria to strike out, and Solano to fly out to end the game and give the Pirates their fifth straight victory.

Player of the Game

With a sweep of the Marlins, the Pirates head back home 20 games above .500. Their first test back will be against the St. Louis Cardinals, as the Red Birds attempt to claw their way back into the race. Gerrit Cole takes the mound for the Pirates, opposing Joe Kelly and the Cardinals. First pitch, 7:05PM.
