Marté Parté: Homers Back Wandy's Dazzling Outing

CINCINNATI - Skeptical? Most fans. Reason to be skeptical? Yes. After reaching a pinnacle of 16 games over .500 in 2012, the Pirates headed into the All-Star break 16 games over, leaving fans to wonder what would happen this year. In typical Pittsburgh fashion, fans have started to lose faith after the two game skid to lead off the second half of the season, especially due to the fact that the two loses have come from the Pirates NL Central foe, Cincinnati. Looking to keep the Bucs from a series sweep, Wandy Rodriguez took the mound to oppose Bronson Arroyo.

Apparently, after the first two games of the series, Starling Marte got the home run memo, leading off the top of the first with a solo shot, giving the Pirates an early 1-0 lead.

With the lead in hand, Rodriguez took the mound and allowed a single to Shin Soo Choo to lead off the game. With Brandon Phillips batting, Choo stole second to put a runner in scoring position with no outs. After getting Phillips to fly out, Rodriguez would strike out Joey Votto and get Jay Bruce to ground out to end the inning.

The second and third innings were quickly paced, as each pitcher breezed through the orders in 1-2-3 fashion. In the top of the 4th, after a Neil Walker ground out, Andrew McCutchen hit a solo shot, giving the Pirates a 2-0 lead.

Ryan Hanigan would return the favor in the bottom of the 4th, hitting a two out solo shot to cut the lead back to one.

In the bottom of the 5th, Travis Snider led off with a double, advancing to third on a ground out by Asdrubal Cabrera. With one out, Wandy Rodriguez back his own cause, singling to right, scoring Snider to give the Bucco's a 3-1 lead. After a scoreless bottom of the 5th, Pedro Alvarez hit his 28th bomb of the season, pushing the lead to 4-1.

Starling Marte would pad the lead in the top of the 8th, hitting his second homer of the game, extending the lead to four. With the Reds down to the last chance of the game, manager Clint Hurdle would turn to recent call-up and former All-Star, Brian Wilson. Wilson had some good stuff velocity wise, but struggled with control. After allowing Joey Votto to reach on an error, Jay Bruce reached on a fielders choice, followed by a single from Todd Frazier to put two on with one out. Ryan Hanigan then lined out for the second out of the inning. Down to their final out, former Bucco Ryan Ludwick singled, scoring Jay Bruce to put the Pirates lead at three. But Brian Wilson would get Chris Heisey to ground out to end the game and send the Pirates to a 5-2 victory.

Player of the Game:

After avoiding the sweep in Cincinnati, the Pirates continue their 10-game road trip, heading to Washington to take on the Nationals in a four game series. In game one, James McDonald will oppose Ross Detwiler. First pitch, 7:05PM.
