A's Power Past Pirates for 3-1 Win

PITTSBURGH - After losing to the Cubs, the Pirates returned to PNC park to open a three game set with the AL West, Oakland Athletics. The Pirates haven't gotten much done offensively as of late, but their pitching has held them in the games enough to win ball games. Game one of the three game set was scheduled for James McDonald to opppose Bartolo Colon. However, Colon was scratched for reasons unknown at this time, and was replaced by righty Dan Straily.

James McDonald got off to a quick start in the top of the 1st, as he got Jamile Weeks to strike out, followed by a ground out from Young. Yoenis Cespedes would then single, putting a runner on with two outs. Brandon Moss would then strike out to end the top half of the 1st. Straily would breeze through the Pirates in the bottom of the 1st, getting Cabrera to ground out, Freddy Sanchez to strike out, and McCutchen to strike out to end the inning.

McDonald allowed a lead off single to Montero in the top of the 2nd, but would follow with a strike out by Smith, followed by Lowrie grounding into a double play to end the top of the 2nd. The Pirates would go quickly again in the bottom of the 2nd, as Dan Straily put it on cruise. The 3rd and 4th innings would be much of the same, as neither team got a runner past first base. In the top of the 5th, McDonald allowed a single to Lowrie, who would then score on a two out home run from Jamile Weeks to give the A's a 2-0 lead.

After a scoreless 6th, the Pirates would get the offense going in the bottom of the 7th, as Freddy Sanchez led off with a double. After Andrew McCutchen grounded out and Pedro Alvarez struck out, Starling Marte singled, scoring Sanchez to pull the Pirates to within one.

But the A's would get the run right back, as Brandon Moss hit a solo shot off of Kyle McPherson in the top of the 8th inning, giving the A's another two run cushion.

In the bottom of the 8th, Russell Martin struck out but reached first on a drop third strike. After Brandon Inge and Asdrubal Cabrera each struck out, Freddy Sanchez singled, putting runners on first and third with two outs. Andrew McCutchen stepped up to the plate, looking to give the Pirates the lead of the tie, but flew out at the warning track to end the inning. Mark Melancon made quick work of the A's in the top of the 9th, but Grant Balfour shut the door on the Pirates in the bottom of the 9th, as the A's take game one of the series.

Player of the Game:

The A's and Pirates go again tomorrow evening, as Gerrit Cole takes the mound to oppose Jarrod Parker. First pitch, 7:05PM.
