Pirates Knock Around Cubs in 4-1 Win

CHICAGO - After Francisco Liriano nearly threw a no hitter against the Cubs in game one, the Pirates looked to continue their success at Wrigley Field, as A.J. Burnett took the mound to oppose Scott Baker.

Baker, having a decent season thus far, made quick work of the Pirates in the top of the 1st, as Pie, Freddy Sanchez, and McCutchen would each ground out. In the bottom of the 1st, with two outs, Starling Castro singled, but for naught, as Anthony Rizzo followed with a fly out to end the inning. In the top of the 2nd, Pedro Alvarez singled on a ball deflected off of Alfonso Soriano, followed by a single from Garrett Jones, putting two on with no outs. Gaby Sanchez then hit into a double play, advancing Alvarez to third. Clint Barmes then struck out to end the Pirates threat. In the bottom of the 2nd, Burnett collected two strikeouts and a groundout to end the inning.

The third inning didn't bring much action, as the Pirates only base runner was when Russell Martin reached first on a fielding error by Anthony Rizzo. Nothing came from it in the top of the 3rd, and Burnett breezed through the Cubs in the bottom half. In the top of the 4th, Andrew McCutchen led off with a walk, followed by a single from Pedro Alvarez to put two on with no outs. Garrett Jones then grounded out to first, scoring McCutchen to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead.

Gaby Sanchez would ground out to advance Alvarez to third, but Barmes would fly out to end the inning. In the top of the 6th, Andrew McCutchen took the first pitch he saw out of the park for a solo shot, his 26th on the season, giving the Pirates a 2-0 lead.

With the score still 2-0 leading into the top of the 7th, Ian Stewart looked to get the Cubs on track as he lined a ball to left field, only to be robbed by Felix Pie for the out.

Burnett would get the remaining two outs to end the 7th. After a scoreless top of the 8th, Duke Welker came out of the bullpen, looking to bridge the gap into Jason Grilli. Welker, who had yet to be scored on yet, made his first appearance in the set up role. Nervous from the situation, Welker allowed a two out solo shot to Sappelt to cut the Pirates lead to 2-1.

Welker would then get David DeJesus to pop out to end the inning. In the top of the 9th, the Pirates pulled away from the Cubs, as Clint Barmes led off with a solo shot, followed by Russell Martin scoring on an RBI single by Freddy Sanchez to push the lead to 4-1. Jason Grilli would come in to close in the bottom of the 9th and would continue to make it look easy, as Castro grounded out, Rizzo struck out, and Schierholtz flew out to end the game.

Player of the Game:

With the series already in hand, the Pirates look to sweep the Cubs in the series finale, as Wandy Rodriguez takes the mound to oppose Travis Wood. First pitch, 2:20PM.
