Liriano Flirts With No-Hitter as Pirates Down Cubs 2-0

CHICAGO - Already breaking the high point of 16 games over .500 in 2012, the Pirates look to continue their winning ways, as they head into Wrigley Field to oppose their NL Central foe, Chicago Cubs. The Pirates haven't been getting much done offensively, but what they have been getting has been just enough to take their lights out pitching to another tier. Taking the mound for the Pirates in game one, is lefty Francisco Liriano, opposing right Jeff Samardzija.

In the top of the 1st inning, Starling Marte reached first base on a fielding error by Starlin Castro. Marte took advantage of the error, stealing second base to put himself into scoring position. Marte would get stuck at second however, as Freddy Sanchez followed with a lineout, with McCutchen and Alvarez each flying out to end the inning. In the bottom of the 1st, Francisco Liriano was dealing some high cheese, as he struck out Barney and Sappelt to lead off the bottom of the 1st. Starlin Castro then reached on a fielding error by Freddy Sanchez, but would leave to not as Anthony Rizzo flew out to end the inning.

The 2nd inning didn't bring much action, as Asdrubal Cabrera reached on a throwing error by Samardzija, but would not advance as Snider and Martin grounded out to end the inning. Liriano would get three quick outs in the bottom of the 2nd, as Hairston, Castillo, and Soriano each flew out. Liriano helped his own cause in the top of the third, as he led off with a single, then advancing to second on a sacrifice by Starling Marte. After Freddy Sanchez grounded out, which advanced Liriano to third, Andrew McCutchen singled, scoring Liriano to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead.

Liriano would get Stewart and Barney to strike out in the bottom of the 3rd, as well as a Samardzija ground out. In the top of the 4th, Pedro Alvarez crushed a 2-2 pitch to deep center field, his 25th home run on the season, giving the Pirates a 2-0 lead.

The 5th - 8th innings can only be summed by saying not much happened, as Liriano continued to deal strikeout pitches, taking a no hitter into the top of the 9th. Ian Stewart stepped up to lead off the 9th, only to strike out for Liriano's tenth punch out of the game. Pinch hitter Navarro then stepped in and took the first pitch he saw for a bloop single, ending the no hit bid. After Liriano allowed the single, Darwin Barney would ground into a double play to end the game.

Player of the Game:

After a near perfect game from Francisco Liriano in game one, the Pirates and Cubs square off in game two, as A.J. Burnett opposes Scott Baker. First pitch, 4:05PM.
