Pirates Fend Off Brewers Rally for 3-2 Win, Series

PITTSBURGH - With the 2013 season already half way in the books, the Pirates and Brewers faced off in the rubber match of their three game set. While splitting the first two games of the series, the Pirates sent A.J. Burnett to the mound to oppose Yovani Gallardo and the Brewers.

In the top of the 1st, Burnett walked Aoki after a grueling eight pitch at bat. After striking out Segura, Ryan Braun singled, advancing Aoki to second. Corey Hart then grounded out, advancing Aoki and Braun to second and third with two outs. Former Buccos Aramis Ramirez would step up to the plate looking to down his former team, but would line out to Clint Barmes to end the top of the 1st. In the bottom of the 1st, Starling Marte led off with a single, followed by a steal of second. Andrew McCutchen then doubled with two outs, advancing to third after Pedro Alvarez advanced on a dropped third strike. Garrett Jones then singled, scoring McCutchen to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead.

Travis Snider would ground out to end the inning. Burnett and Gallardo each sailed through the second and third innings, retiring the sides in order. After retiring the side in the top of the 4th, Pedro Alvarez led off the bottom of the 4th with a single. Alvarez would then score on a two-run shot by Garrett Jones, giving the Pirates a 3-0 lead.

The top of the 5th would get the Brewers back into the game, as Jonathan Lucroy led off with a single. Gomez then singled with one out, putting runners two on with one out. Gallardo then sacrificed to Burnett, advancing the runners to second and third. Aoki then grounded to Burnett who over threw at home, allowing Lucroy to score. Gomez looked to tack on the second run, but was called out at home to only cut the score to 3-1 in the Pirates favor.

After scoreless innings in the 6th and 7th, the Brewers faced set up man Mark Melancon, looking to bridge the gap to Jason Grilli in the 9th. Segura led off the 8th with a single, followed by a double from Ryan Braun that scored Segura to bring the Brewers to within one.

Melancon then struck out Corey Hart and got Ramirez to fly out, which advancing Braun to third. Lucroy, already struggling on the day, struck out to end the inning. In the top of the 9th, Jason Grilli came in looking to collect his 29th save on the season. Grilli made quick work of the Brewers, getting Weeks to fly out, Gomez to ground out, and Maldonado to strike out to end the game.

Player of the Game:
