Cabrera, Alvarez Fuel Pirates Drubbing of Brewers

PITTSBURGH - The Brewers are having a dismal season thus far; quite opposite of how the Pirates are performing. Yes the Pirates were sixteen games above .500 in 2012, but this team looks different. After seeing the Bucco's get handled by the Brewers in game one of the three game set, one can only wonder if things will again go south for the Bucs. In game two of the series, Francisco Liriano takes the mound opposing Kyle Lohse.

The Pirates needed another big pitching performance with a suddenly quite offense, hoping that Liriano would do just that. In the top of the 1st, Liriano got Aoki to ground out, followed by a strike out of Weeks and a pop out by Ryan Braun to end the top of the inning. In the bottom of the 1st, after Freddy Sanchez grounded out, Asdrubal Cabrera reached on a thorwing error by Weeks. Andrew McCutchen then grounded into a double play to end the inning.

In the top of the 2nd, Aramis Ramirez led off with a single, then advanced to third on a double by Yuniesky Betancourt. Liriano would then get Gomez to pop out and Gonzalez to ground out to end the Brewers threat. In the bottom of the 2nd, on the first pitch from Lohse, Pedro Alvarez homered to left, giving the Pirates a 1-0 lead.

In the top of the 3rd, Liriano got two quick outs by getting Kyle Lohse to strike out and Aoki to fly out. But trouble began to brew, as Rickie Weeks tripled off the wall, followed by a double from Ryan Braun which scored Weeks, tying the game at 1-1.

Liriano would get Aramis Ramirez to line out to end the inning. In the bottom of the 3rd, Liriano would help his own cause, singling with one out. After Freddy Sanchez struck out, Asdrubal Cabrera homered over the Clemente wall, scoring Liriano, giving the Pirates a 3-1 lead.

Andrew McCutchen would follow with a double, followed by a single from Pedro Alvarez; McCutchen would be called out at third to end the inning. Liriano and Lohse would breeze through the 4th inning, but the 5th would lead to a disaster for Lohse. Russell Martin led off the 5th with a single, sacrificed to second by Liriano. Freddy Sanchez was then hit by a pitch, followed by a single from Cabrera to score Martin, giving the Pirates a 4-1 lead. Andrew McCutchen then singled, scoring Sanchez to push the Pirates ahead 5-1. Pedro Alvarez would strike out to end the inning.

After a scoreless top of the 6th, Travis Snider hit a two out single, then scoring on a 2-run shot from Russell Martin to extend the Pirates lead to 7-1.

Offenses would stall for each team, as the bullpens took over the game into the 9th. With Tony Watson in for the mop up role, a single by Gomez put one on with one out. Gonzalez then reached on a fielders choice, setting up a strike out of Jonathan Lucroy to end the game.

Player of the Game:

With the series tied at a game a piece, the Pirates and Brewers each look to take the rubber match for the series victory. A pair of aces square off as the Yovani Gallardo opposes A.J. Burnett. First pitch, 1:35PM.
