Offensive Struggles Continue to Haunt Pirates as Brewers Steal a Win in the 14th

PITTSBURGH - After ending their road trip on a high note by sweeping the Mariners at Safeco, the Pirates returned to PNC Park to welcome the Milwaukee Brewers for a three game weekend series. Pirates #1 pick Gerrit Cole would be taking the mound to make his third start of his young career, going up against Marco Estrada and the Brewers.

The Brewers started working Gerrit Cole early, not swinging at many of his corner painted pitches. After getting Aoki to strike out and Segura to ground out, Cole gave up a double to left to Ryan Braun. Corey Hart would step in looking to get Braun around, but couldn't, as he would ground out to end the inning. In the bottom of the 1st, Marco Estrada got Asdrubal to strike out, followed by a fly out from Freddy Sanchez who remains hitless in his return stint to Pittsburgh. Andrew McCutchen would strike out to end the 1st.

The 2nd inning went quickly for each team, as Cole would collect two strikeouts in the top of the 2nd, followed by Estrada collecting one in the bottom of the 2nd. In the top of the 3rd, Carlos Gomez singled, then took second on a sacrifice by Estrada. Cole would ramp up a 99MPH fastball to strike out Aoki to end the inning.

The Pirates would remain hitless, as Snider struck out, Martin flew out, and Cole struck out to end the inning. In the bottom of the 4th, Andrew McCutchen doubled with two outs, but was stranded at second as Pedro Alvarez flew out at the warning track to end the inning. The 5th and 6th innings were much of the same, as each pitcher retired the respective sides in order.

With Cole at 95 pitches, the Pirates turned to rooke reliver Duke Welker, who brings a 0.00 ERA after 20+ innings of work. But the Brewers would get a runner in scoring position with two outs after Gomez singled and was then sacrificed by Estrada. But Welker would get Aoki to ground out to end the inning.

The game would stay tied heading into extra innings, as both teams bullpens were locked in. In the top of the 14th, with Mark Melancon pitching, Aoki led off with a single. Segura then sacrificed him to second. Melancon would get Ryan Braun to pop out, leaving the Brewers down to their final out. Melancon threw a high fastball in the upper corner of the zone, only for Corey Hart to take to deep center field for a double, scoring Aoki to give the Brewers a 1-0 lead.

John Axford would make quick work of the Pirates in the bottom of the 14th, getting Marte, Snider, and Martin to fly out to end the game.

Player of the Game:

The Pirates and Brewers go again tomorrow evening, as Francisco Liriano opposes Kyle Lohse. First pitch, 7:15PM.
