Grilli Nearly Blows Save as Pirates Hold on for Series Sweep

SEATTLE - After a thrilling comeback win in extra innings in game one, the Pirates look to take the two game mini sweep from the Mariners. Taking the hill for the Bucco's, righty James McDonald, opposing Blake Bleaven and the Mariners.

In the top of the 1st, Andrew McCutchen singled with two outs, followed by him stealing second base and third base, with Pedro Alvarez up to bat. Alvarez would strike out, but would score on a dropped first pitch (wild pitch) that would score McCutchen to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead.

James McDonald would breeze through the bottom of the top of the 1st, as he would get Ackley to ground out, Ryan to strike out, and Morse to line out to end the inning. Each pitcher locked in for the 2nd through 5th innings, retiring the opposing sides in order. In the top of the 6th, Russell Martin stepped to the plate and drove one to deep right field, giving the Pirates a 2-0 lead.

The 7th inning was much of the same, as the pitchers continued to dual. After each side was retired in the 8th, the Pirates were again sat down in order, hoping that their 2-0 lead was good enough to secure the victory. Jason Grilli was called upon for the 9th, looking to collect his 28th save on the season. Grilli would allow back to back singles to Ryan and Morse. Morales would strike out swinging on an 0-2 count for the first out. Jesus Montero then reached second on a field error by Andrew McCutchen, scoring Ryan to cut the Pirates lead to one with only one out. Kyle Seager then reached on a fielders choice, followed by a ground out from Raul Ibanez to get to end the game.
