Martin's Clutch RBI Single in 12th Sends Pirates to 3-2 Win

SEATTLE - After the Pirates avoided a sweep at the hands of the LA Angels, the road trip continued into Seattle, as the Pirates were welcomed to Safeco field for the remaining two games of a home and home series. Taking the mound for the Pirates, was Wandy Rodriguez, opposing Seattle's Brandon Maurer.

As their offense has been stifled as of late, the Pirates looked to get things going offensively early. After Starling Marte grounded out to lead off the 1st, Asdrubal Cabrera followed by reaching first on a throwing error by Ackley. Andrew McCutchen would strike out, followed by a ground out from Alvarez to end the inning. Wandy Rodriguez would have no issues in the bottom of the 1st, getting Ackley to strike out, followed by ground outs from Gutierrez and Morse to end the inning.

After the Pirates were retired in order in the top of the 2nd, Kyle Seagar led off the bottom of the 2nd with a double. After Rodriguez got Ibanez to strike out, Saunders singled to center, putting runners of first and third with one out. Wandy would then get both Andino and Shoppach to strike out to end the threat in the 2nd. Each pitcher made it through the 3rd without any speedbumps, keeping the game tied at zero heading into the 4th. The Pirates were once again turned away, retired in order. Kyle Seagar led off the bottom of the 4th with a single from a deflection, then advancing to second on a ground out. Saunders then chopped a single, advancing Seagar to third. Andino would strike out and Shoppach would fly out to end the inning.

Maurer again made quick work of the Pirates in the top of the 5th, keeping them scoreless. In the bottom of the 5th, Gutierrez singled, followed by a single from Morse. After Jesus Montero flew out to left, Gutierrez advanced to third with one out. Kyle Seager then tripled, scoring both Gutierrez and Morse to give the Mariners a 2-0 lead.

Quick innings again played a factor in the 7th, leading to a breakout from the Pirates in the 8th. Russell Martin reached on a throwing error by Andino, followed by a single from Gaby Sanchez. After a wild pitch from Drew Storen with Brandon Inge batting, Martin and Sanchez advanced to second and third with no outs. Inge then singled, scoring Russell Martin to cut the lead to 2-1.

Clint Barmes then grounded into a double play, scoring Sanchez to tie the game at two.

Starling Marte would fly out to end the inning. In the bottom of the 8th, Kyle Seagar hit a hard ground ball up the middle, only to be caught by Cabrera on the run, who then did an incredible jump turn throw to first for the first out.

After a scoreless 9th, the Pirates were again headed into extra innings. Bullpens locked in for the 10th and 11th innings, keeping the game tied at two going into the 12th. Asdrubal Cabrera led off with a single, followed by a one out single from Alvarez to put two on with one out. Garrett Jones then struck out for the second out of the inning. But as they've done all season long, the Pirates continued to battle as Russell Martin singled, scoring Cabrera to give the Pirates a 3-2 lead.

With the Pirates up 3-2, manager Clint Hurdle to decided to again go with Jason Grilli, who has blown his previous two saves. Grilli would show no signs of fatigue, as he'd get Gutierrez and Morse to fly out, followed by a huge strikeout from Jesus Montero to end the game.

Player of the Game:
