Pirates Win Thriller in 16th After Grilli's Second Blown Save

ANAHEIM - The pitching matchups in this series have lived up to their hypes; however, the games have not gone in the Pirates favor. With the series already won by the Angels, the Pirates look to avoid the sweep, sending A.J. Burnett to the mound to oppose C.J. Wilson.

The first three innings of the game quickly flew by, as both A.J. Burnett and C.J. Wilson retired the sides in order, not allowing a hit or a walk. In the top of the 4th, Andrew McCutchen hit a two out single, the first hit of the game, only to be stranded as Pedro Alvarez grounded out to end the inning. After Burnett stayed perfect through four, the Pirates got to work in the top of the 5th. Travis Snider hit a one out single, followed by a single from Russell Martin that advanced Snider to third. Gaby Sanchez then reached on a fielders choice, scoring Snider to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the 5th, Burnett allowed a lead off single to Mark Trumbo, but would get Kendrick to line out and Bourjos to ground into a double play to end the inning. In the top of the 6th with two outs, Andrew McCutchen doubled, followed by an intentional walk issued to Pedro Alvarez. Garrett Jones would pop out to end the Pirates threat in the 6th. After a scoreless 7th from the Pirates, Burnett got back to work, getting Albert Pujols to fly out for the first out. But Mark Trumbo took his team on his shoulders, hitting a solo shot to center, bringing the Angels even at one with the Pirates.

Burnett then allowed a single to Bourjos, followed by a single to Shuck to put two on with one out. After a mound visit from Ray Searage, Burnett would get Hester to strike out to end the inning. After a scoreless 8th inning, the Angels brough in Kevin Jepsen to pitch. The first batter he faced, Pedro Alvarez, took him yard to give the Pirates a 2-1 lead.

With a 2-1 lead heading into the bottom of the 9th, Jason Grilli was called upon for his first save opportunity since his previous blown save. Grilli got Mark Trumbo to strike out on four pitches, followed by a line out by Kendrick for the second out. Then, on a 1-2 pitch in the lower outside part of the zone, Peter Bourjos homered to right, tying the game at two and blowing Grilli's second save on the season.

Each teams bullpen ran roughshot through the other teams lineup, as the Pirates and Angels were deadlocked at two heading into the 16th. Starling Marte hit a single with one out and then stole second with Asdrubal Cabrera batting. Marte would advance to third as Cabrera grounded out. Andrew McCutchen then hit a ground ball to shortstop scoring Marte as McCutchen was called safe at first, giving the Pirates a 3-2 lead.

Tony Watson would continue to pitch for the bottom of the 16th, getting Callaspo and Pujols to ground out, followed by Mark Trumbo striking out on a 2-2 fastball to give the Pirates the victory.

Player of the Game:

With an off day tomorrow, the Pirates head to Seattle on Tuesday for a two game set. The Pirates send Wandy Rodriguez to the mound to oppose Brandon Mauerer. First pitch, 10:10PM.
