Angels Hand Cole First Loss in 3-1 Pitchers Dual

ANAHEIM - The Pirates started their road trip off with a series split at Cincinnati. Heading on the road to the dreaded state of California, the Pirates square off against the Angels in a three game weekend series. In game one, the Pirates will send Gerrit Cole to the hill, making his third career start, to oppose Joe Blanton.

Cole has faced two good lineups thus far in the Giants and Dodgers, but even their lineups are not comparable to the Angels. Cole got into trouble right from the get go, as he allowed a lead off double to Erick Aybar. Alberto Callaspo then grounded out, advancing Aybar to thrid. Josh Hamilton then grounded out, scoring Aybar to give the Angels a 1-0 lead.

Cole would get Albert Pujols to strike out chasing on a 1-2, 98MPH fastball to end the inning. Joe Blanton set the Pirates down in order in the top of the 2nd. With two outs in the bottom of the 2nd, Chris Iannetta homered to deep left, giving the Angels a 2-0 lead.

The 3rd inning was quick for both pitchers, as they each retired the sides in order. In the top of the 4th, Starling Marte singled to lead off, then advancing to second on a ground out by Jordy Mercer. Andrew McCutchen and Garrett Jones would strike out to end the top of the 4th. After a scoreless bottom 4th from Cole, the Pirates finally made some noise. After Russell Martin doubled with one out, Gaby Sanchez singled, advancing Martin to third. Clint Barmes then singled, scoring Martin to cut the Pirates lead to one.

Starling Marte would follow with a single to load the bases, only for Jordy Mercer to ground out to end the threat and the inning. Pitching locked in and dominated until the bottom of the 8th, when Cole allowed a single to Bourjos. Jared Hughes was called upon to replace call, immediately striking out Witherspoon for the first out. Aybar then walked, followed by a steal from Bourjos to put runners on first and third with one out. Josh Hamilton would single, scoring Bourjos to give the Angels a 3-1 lead.

Down to there last three outs, Garrett Jones lead off the top of the 9th with a single, but would be forced into a double play by Travis Snider. Russell Martin would then ground out to end the inning.

Player of the Game:

The Pirates and Angels go at it again tomorrow night, as Francisco Liriano opposes Jered Weaver. First pitch, 9:05PM.
