Pirates Rally in 7th to Take Down Giants for Sixth Straight Win

PITTSBURGH - After a stellar pitching performance from Gerrit Cole in game one of this three game set against the Giants, the Pirates looked to settle in after the game one hype. Taking the mound for the Pirates, lefty Francisco Liriano, to oppose former Pirates Ryan Vogelsong.

Francisco Liriano got to see first hand that what Gerrit Cole did in last nights game was truly impressive. On the first pitch of the game, Angel Pagan singled, stealing second with Gregor Blanco batting. After Blanco struck out and Buster Posey grounded out, Hunter Pence singled, scoring Pagan to give the Giants a 1-0 lead.

Joaquin Arias would ground out to end the inning. Ryan Vogelsong chopped down the Pirates in the 1st, getting Cabrera, Marte and McCutchen all to ground out on six pitches. In the top of the 2nd, Liriano again got into trouble. After getting Marco Scutaro to fly out, Liriano allowed singles to Brandon Belt and Brandon Crawford to put two on with one out. After Ryan Vogelsong advanced the runners on a sacrifice bunt, Angel Pagan grounded out to end the inning.

Vogelsong allowed Garrett Jones to pick up the Pirates first hit in the bottom of the 2nd, but would get Travis Snider to ground into a double play to end the inning. In the top of the 3rd, after allowing a lead off single to Gregor Blanco, Liriano got Buster Posey to ground out into a beautiful double play by Asdrubal Cabrera.

Hunter Pence would double with two outs, only two be stranded on a ground out by Arias. In the bottom of the 4th, Asdrubal Cabrera led off with a single, but would be caught stealing with McCutchen batting. Unfortunately, Cabrera would've scored, as McCutchen doubled to deep center. Pedro Alvarez flew out at the warning track to end the inning.

With the Giants still leading the Pirates heading into the bottom of the 7th, Andrew McCutchen would double to center to lead off. Vogelsong would be replaced by Jeremy Affeldt, who immediately surrendered a single to Pedro Alvarez which would score McCutchen to tie the game at one.

Garrett Jones then doubled, scoring Alvarez to give the Pirates a 2-1 lead. Jones would be tagged out at third, trying to extend the double to a triple. With two outs, Russell Martin blasted a solo shot to center field, putting the Pirates ahead 3-1.

The Giants made some noise in the top of the 8th with Justin Wilson pitching. Angel Pagan led off with a single, followed by a double to Angel Pagan to put runners on second and third with no outs. Clint Hurdle quickly pulled Wilson, turning to reliable righty Duke Welker. After Bustery Posey reached first on a throwing error, Welker got Hunter pence to strike out for the first out of the inning. Joaqin Arias then reached first on a fielders choice, as Pagan was called out at home for the second out. But Marco Scutaro would single, scoring Blanco to pull the Giants to with one. Welker would dig deep and get Brandon Belt to ground out to end the inning with the Pirates still ahead 3-2.

In the bottom of the 8th, Brandon Inge homered, pushing the score to 4-2 Pirates. After Starling Marte singled and stole second, Pedro Alvarez singled him home, pushing the Pirates lead to 5-2. As usual with the Pirates ahead heading into the 9th, Jason Grilli was called upon, looking for his 23rd save. Grilli would get Crawford and Abreu to fly out, followed by a ground out from Angel Pagan to end the inning and give the Pirates their sixth straight victory.
