Extra, Extra: Pirates Sweep Cubs on Marte's RBI single in 11th Inning

CHICAGO - With the series already in hand, the Pirates sent James McDonald to the mound, looking for a sweep the Cubs. The Cubs would counter with Scott Baker, trying to avoid the sweep in front of the home crowd of over 33,000 fans.

Scott Baker and the Cubs looked ready to play today, as Baker got Marte to strike out and Cabrera to ground out to lead off the top of the 1st. After a single to Andrew McCutchen, Pedro Alvarez popped out to end the inning. James McDonald struggled early, not looking like the pitcher who has pitched so effectively so far. On a 2-1 count, Darwin Barney blasted a solo shot to left field, giving the Cubs a 1-0 lead.

David DeJesus followed with a single, then scoring on a two-run shot from Starling Castro to put the Cubs ahead 3-0.

McDonald would settle down, getting Rizzo to pop out, Schierholtz to ground out, and Soriano to strike out to end the inning. With two outs in the top of the 2nd, Garrett Jones and Clint Barmes each had reached safely, only to be stranded on a ground out by James McDonald to end the inning. McDonald started looking like himself in the bottom of the 2nd, getting a quick 1-2-3 inning. The Pirates came out swinging in the top of the 3rd, as Asdrubal Cabrera doubled to center, advancing to third on a single by Andrew McCutchen. After McCutchen was caught stealing, Pedro Alvarez singled to right, scoring Cabrera to cut the lead to 3-1.

Garrett Jones followed by reaching on a throwing error by Navarro, advancing Alvarez to third. Travis Snider then doubled to deep right, scoring both Alvarez and Jones to tie the game at 3.

After getting DeJesus to ground out and Castro to strike out to lead off the bottom of the third, McDonald walked Anthony Rizzo, who would then steal 2nd. Nate Schierholtz then singled to center, scoring Rizzo to put the Cubs back up 4-3.

McDonald and Baker would cruise through the 4th and 5th innings. Baker would get through the top of the 6th, after allowing singles to Jones and Martin, by getting Gaby Sanchez to fly out to end the threat. Jeff Karstens took over for McDonald in the bottom of the 6th, retiring the side in order. After a scoreless 7th inning, Garrett Jones tied the game at 4 on a solo shot to deep center field.

The Pirates and Cubs bullpens each locked in, keeping runs off the board until the 11th. Russell Martin led off the top of the 11th by single, then being sacrificed to second by Clint Barmes. Felix Pie, pinch hitting for Jared Hughes, flew out at the warning track, advancing Martin to thrid. After striking out five times thus far in the game, Starling Marte came up with the biggest hit of the game, an RBI single to score Russell Martin that gave the Pirates a 5-4 lead.

Jason Grilli would come in two innings later than normal, but would get Soriano, Hairston, and Valvuena all to pop out to end the game and give the Pirates the three game sweep of the Cubs.

Player of the Game:

The Pirates have another off day tomorrow, but kick off a 6 game home stand starting on Tuesday, when #1 Prospect Gerrit Cole makes his MLB debut, opposing Tim Lincecum and the San Francisco Giants. First pitch, 7:05PM.
