Wandy, Grilli Combine for 3-0 Shutout of Cubs

CHICAGO - The Pirates offense finally awoke in game one against the Cubs, as Pedro Alvarez hit two bombs and drove in four of the seven earned runs. Game two of the three game series set up to be a good one, as lefty Wandy Rodriguez opposed baseball turned star Jeff Samardzija.

In the top of the 1st, with one out, newly acquired Asdrubal Cabrera hit his first hit as a Pirate.

Cabrera would be stranded as Andrew McCutchen grounded into a double play to end the inning. In the bottom of the 1st, Wandy Rodriguez would get Barney and Sappelt to ground out, followed by a strikeout by Starling Castro to end the inning.

In the top of the 2nd, Pedro Alvarez led off with a single. After Garrett Jones flew out to center, Travis Snider singled to put two on with one out. Russell Martin then singled, scoring Pedro Alvarez to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead.

Clint Barmes would strike out and Wandy Rodriguez would ground out to end the inning. After a quick 1-2-3 3rd inning from each pitcher, the Pirates added on in the 4th as Pedro Alvarez doubled and then scored on a two run dinger from Garrett Jones to give the Pirates a 3-0 lead.

Travis Snider would follow with a single, followed by a single from Russell Martin to put two on with no outs. Clint Barms would strike out for the first out. Wandy Rodriguez would then reach on a ball deflected off of pitcher Jeff Samardzija for a single to load the bases. With two outs, new Bucco Asdrubal Cabrera stepped up to the plate. On a 2-2 count, Cabrera hit a ball to deep center field, only to be caught at the wall by center fielder Dave Sappelt to end the Pirate threat.

Wandy Rodriguez continued to sit the Cubs down in order, striking out nine through eight innings. The Pirates got men on base in the top of the 9th, but could not get any runs across to keep the score at 3-0 heading into the bottom of the 9th. With Rodriguez only at 85 pitches, Clint Hurdle kept him in to go the distance. After allowing a single to Ian Stewart, Rodriguez got Luis Valbuena to strike out for the first out in the bottom of the 9th. Darwin Barney would reach on a fielding error by Wandy Rodriguez to put two on with one out. But on a 2-1 count to Sappelt, Wandy Rodriguez called upon the training staff as he was holding his pitching arm in obvious pain. As Rodriguez could not continue, Jason Grilli was called upon, putting him in position for his 20th save. Grill would get Sappelt to ground into a fielders choice and Castro to fly out to end the game.

After the game, Wandy Rodriguez was asked how he was feeling and stated that he was cramping, and shouldn't miss any time.

Player of the Game:

With a win in game two, the Pirates took the series from the Cubs, but will look to take the series in a sweep of game three. James McDonald takes the mound to oppose Scott Baker. First pitch, 2:20PM.
