Wrigley Can't Contain Alvarez as Pirates Crush Cubs 7-3

CHICAGO - After taking their series from the Braves, the Pirates were welcomed to Wrigley Field for their first trip of the year. A.J. Burnett took the mound for the Pirates, opposing Scott Feldman who replaced scheduled starter Carlos Villanueva.

In the top of the 1st, Starling Marte reached first on a field error by pitcher Scott Feldman. Marte would advance to third on a single from Andrew McCutchen, putting two on with two outs for Pedro Alvarez. Alvarez took the first pitch he saw and hit a bomb to right field, giving the Pirates a 3-0 lead.

Feldman would get out of the inning by getting Jones to ground out and Martin to strike out. Burnett made quick work of the Cubs in the bottom of the first, striking out Darwin Barney and getting DeJesus and Castro to ground out. Feldman settled down in the top of the 2nd, only allowing a single to Clint Barmes, who would be stranded at second as Starling Marte popped out to end the inning. In the bottom of the 2nd with two outs, Burnett walked Alfonso Soriano, who would score on an RBI double from Dioner Navarro, cutting the score to 3-1.

Burnett and Feldman would lock in, retiring the sides in order for the 3rd, 4th, and 5th innings. In the top of the 6th, the Pirates chased Feldman, as McCutchen led off the inning with a single. With Russell pitching, McCutchen stole second base, and then stole third with one out. Garrett Jones then doubled, scoring McCutchen to give the Pirates a 4-1 lead. Russell Martin flew out to end the inning.

In the bottom of the 6th, Burnett got DeJesus to ground out to lead off the inning, but ran into trouble. Starling Castro singled, followed by a single from Anthony Rizzo to put two on with one out. Nate Schierholtz would follow with a single of his own, scoring Castro to pull the Cubs to within 2.

Alfonso Soriano then singled to load the bases, with Navarro hitting a sac fly to scoring Rizzo, give the Pirates a 4-3 edge. With Burnett being taken out, Duke Welker would get Ian Stewart to fly out to end the Cubs rally and the inning. But the Pirates would threaten in the top of the 7th, as Brandon Inge and Clint Barmes led off with singles. After a Gaby Sanchez double play, Starling Marte doubled to left, scoring Inge to put the Pirates up 5-3.

The Pirates would tack on two more runs, 1 in the 8th off a solo shot from Pedro Alvarez, his second of the game, and another from a pinch hit home run from Felix Pie to give the Pirates a 7-3 lead. With the save opportunity no longer in place, Jared Hughes would be called upon to pitch in the bottom of the 9th. Hughes would get pinc hitter Sappelt, Ian Stewart, and Ramon Castillo to strike out in order to end the game.

Player of the Game:

The Pirates and Cubs square off in game two of this three game weekend set, as lefty Wandy Rodriguez opposes Jeff Samardzija. First pitch, 4:05PM.
