A Look Into the Pirates, Orioles Trade

Today's trade with the Orioles brought lots of potential to the Pirates. First and foremost, it opened a spot in the rotation for #1 prospect Gerrit Cole. Cole was absolutely stellar in AAA this year. With an 8-1 record and 1.95 ERA, Cole simply could not be overlooked.

Cole fast tracked his way through the minors, after being selected as the #1 overall pick in 2011 First Year Player Draft. Cole signed a contract with the Pirates, with an $8 million signing bonus, 15 minutes before the signing deadline on Aug. 15, 2011. Cole was sent to the Pirates High A affiliate, the Bradenton Marauders, to begin the 2012 season. In the games started, Cole had a 5-1 record with a 2.55 ERA. In his 67 innings pitched, Cole allowed 19 earned runs on 53 hits, while walking 21 and striking out 69. Cole was then promoted to Double-A Altoona, where he compiled a 2.90 ERA in 59 innings, allowing 19 earned runs on 54 hits, while walking 23 and striking out 60. Cole would end the year in Triple-A Indianapolis, pitching in only one game. In that game, Cole allowed 3 earned runs on 6 hits, while walking 1 and striking out 7.

Jair Jurrjens was ranked the Atlanta Braves 3rd best prospect entering 2008. After undergoing arthroscopic surgery for a torn meniscus in October 2010, Jurrjens began the 2011 season on the DL, but got off to a strong start after he was activated. He pitched his first career shutout on July 1, 2011 against the Baltimore Orioles, allowing one hit and one walk. Jurrjens led the National League in wins and ERA at the All-Star break, and was chosen to play in his first All-Star Game. He pitched 1⅔ scoreless innings in the NL's 5–1 win. Following the All-Star break, Jurrjens went 0–1 with a 6.26 ERA in four starts and was placed on the 15-day DL due to pain in his surgically repaired right knee. Jurrjens got off to a poor start in the 2012 season, with an 0-2 record and a 9.37 ERA in his first four starts, later being optioned to the Braves' Triple-A affiliate in Gwinnett, his first demotion in five seasons with the Braves. Signing with the Orioles in January 2013, Jurrjens was assigned to AA, where pitched in 7 games, compiling a 2-2 record, pitching 51.1 innings. In the 51.1 innings, Jurrjens had a 1.40 ERA, allowing 35 hits, while striking out 27 and walking 12.
