Offense Sparks Dominant Performance from Liriano in 9-3 Win

ATLANTA - The Pirates had a win in sight in game two of this three game set, but with a small lead, the Braves rallied to take the game and tie the series at one heading into the finale. Looking to finally win another series, the Pirates turned to lefty Francisco Liriano, opposing former Pirate lefty Paul Maholm.

After Paul Maholm got Starling Marte to fly out to lead off the 1st, Travis Snider stepped into the box and drove a 1-2 pitch to deep right field for a solo home run, giving the Pirates an early 1-0 lead.

After allowing only one run on six hits in his previous outing against Cincinnati, Liriano ran into trouble early against a stacked Braves lineup. Andrelton Simmons led off with a single, then reaching second on a wild pitch. After Reed Johnson struck out swinging, Justin Upton doubled to left, scoring Simmons to tie the game at 1.

Jason Heward then singled, advancing Upton to third. After a mound visit from pitching coach Ray Searage, Liriano got into even more trouble, allowing a single to Freddie Freeman, scoring Upton to put the Braves ahead 2-1. Dan Uggla would reach first on a throwing error by Clint Barmes, scoring Heyward to give the Braves a 3-1 lead. Liriano would get Bethancourt to strike out to end the inning.

Maholm breezed through the 2nd inning, getting Inge to strike out, followed by fly outs from Mercer and Barmes. Liriano would allow a single to Simmons, but the threat would be halted as Liriano got Upton to strike out swinging to end the inning.

In the top of the 3rd, Starling Marte would single and advance to second on a ground out by Snider. Andrew McCutchen then blasted a two-run shot, scoring Marte, tying the game at 3.

The Pirates broke the tie in the top of the 4th, as Brandon Inge led off with a double, then scoring on an error by Simmons, giving the Pirates a 4-3 lead. Liriano continued to lock in, getting a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the 4th. Each pitcher locked in for the 5th, each pitching scoreless half innings.

With the Pirates still ahead 4-3 heading into the 7th, Starling Marte looked to cushion the lead, hoping to not replicate yesterdays performance. After leading off with a single, Marte stole second, then advancing to third as Andrew McCutchen was intentionally walked. Garrett Jones followed with a double, scoring Marte to give the Pirates a 5-3 lead. Brandon Inge then put the dagger in the Braves, blasting a three-run home run to give the Pirates an 8-3 lead.

The Bucco's would add one more in the top of the 8th, as Starling Marte would score on a sac fly by Andrew McCutchen to put the score at 9-3. With a pitch count of 102, Liriano would be replaced by Justin Wilson, who would get B.J. Upton to strike out to end the game.

Player of the Game:

The Pirates have an off day tomorrow with the 2013 First Year Player Draft, but head out to Chicago for a three game weekend set with the Cubs. Game one has A.J. Burnett taking the mound, opposing Carlos Villanueva. First pitch, 2:20PM.

Been tracking your dynasty for a while now, coming to say what a great job you've been doing. Takes a lot to play all 162 games. I've tried in past years, but have had to sim through some games here and there.
