McCutchen Continues to Carry Offense in 2-1 Win Over Braves

ATLANTA - After losing the past two series, the Pirates took the road to begin a six game road trip, starting with three against the Braves, with a day off to follow. Taking the mound for the Pirates, is a surging ace in James McDonald, who has been nearly unhittable, bringing with a him a 1.19ERA. Taking the mound for the Braves to oppose McDonald, is righty Brandon Beachy.

In the top of the 1st, Felix Pie flew out to lead off the inning, followed by a ground out from Russell Martin. After working the count to 2-2, Andrew McCutchen blasted a solo home run to left field, giving the Pirates a 1-0 lead. Pedro Alvarez would ground out to end the inning.

After a scoreless 2nd inning, Clint Barmes led off with a solo shot, giving the Pirates a 2-0 lead. In the top of the 4th, Andrew McCutchen led off with a double, but was left stranded at second, as Alvarez grounded out, followed by fly outs from Garrett Jones and Brandon Inge.

The Braves would continue to be held scoreless through the bottom of the 4th, as McDonald would get Justin Upton to strike out swinging to end the inning. Pitching a perfect game through five innings, McDonald finally showed that he was human, allowing a lead off home run to B.J. Upton to cut the Pirates lead to 2-1.

In the top of the 7th, with Luis Avilan pitching, Brandon Inge singled, followed by John McDonald reaching on a fielders choice. Clint Barmes then singled, advancing to second on a sacrifice from James McDonald, putting runners at second and third with two outs. Felix Pie would then ground out on a pitch deflected off Avilan to end the inning.

After allowing a lead off double to Freddie Freeman, Dan Uggla grounded out, advancing Freeman to third. With McDonald in trouble with only one out, Jared Hughes was called upon out of the pen. Hughes would come up big for McDonald, getting Upton and Bethancourt to strike out swinging to end the inning.

In the bottom of the 9th, Jason Grilli collected his 19th save on a 1-2-3 inning.
