Missed Opportunities Doom Pirates as Reds Take Series

PITTSBURGH - With the trade of Homer Bailey, the Pirates would be opposing a Reds bullpen day, as Jonathan Broxton took the mound to oppose lefty Wandy Rodriguez. With a stellar performance from A.J. Burnett the night before, the Pirates looked to continue their winning ways.

Wandy Rodriguez breezed through the top of the 1st inning, getting Brandon Phillips and Cesar Izturis to ground out, followed by a swinging strike out from Joey Votto to retire the side. The Pirates looked to jump over Broxton early, as Starling Marte led off the inning with a single. After a Travis Snider ground out advanced Marte to second, Andrew McCutchen hit a line drive to center field, scoring Marte to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead.

With McCutchen at second and one out, neither Brandon Inge or Garrett Jones could get him home, as each flew out to end the inning. The top of the 2nd went much like it did yesterday, as Rodriguez got Jay Bruce and Chris Heisey to strike out, as well as a fly out from Ryan Ludwick. The Pirates didn't show much life in the second as well, as Russell Martin popped out, Jordy Mercer struck out, and John McDonald lined out to end the inning.

2-2 pitch to Ryan Hanigan - gone. The solo shot would tie the game up at 1.

Wandy would get newly acquired Mike Olt to strike out on three pitches following the solo shot. Broxton and Phillips would each ground out to end the inning. The Pirates looked like they were rallying for a lead in the the 3rd, as Travis Snider singled with 2 outs, advancing to 3rd on a single by Andrew McCutchen. McCutchen would then steal 2nd with Brandon Inge batting. Inge would walk on a called ball four, loading the bases with 2 outs. But Garrett Jones would get caught swinging in the dirt, as he grounded out to Joey Votto to end the threat and the inning.

With two outs in the top of the 4th, the Reds took their first lead of the game, as Jay Bruce homered to left field, giving the Reds a 2-1 lead.

After a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the 5th, the Pirates again tried to claw their way back into the game, as Travis Snider and Andrew McCutchen again singled with 2 outs to put runners at first and second. Pedro Alvarez pinch hit for Brandon Inge, who would strand Snider and McCutchen as he grounded out to end the inning.

As the Reds again went down in order in the top of the 6th, Garrett Jones knotted the game at 2 on a solo shot to deep right field.

After a scorless 7th inning, Rodriguez allowed a lead off single to Todd Frazier. Devin Mesoraco would pinch hit for Negron and would ground into a double play. Brandon Phillips would follow with a 4 pitch walk, then advancing to third on a single by Izturis. After a visit from Ray Searage, Rodriguez allowed a single to Joey Votto, scoring Phillips to give the Reds a 3-2 lead.

The Pirates couldn't get anything going against lefty Oliver in the 8th, as well as the Reds were quieted in the top of the 9th by Duke Welker. Down by one, down to their final three outs, pinch hitter Clint Barmes singled off closer Aroldis Chapman to lead off the inning. John McDonald would sacrifice Barmes to 2nd with one out. With Gaby Sanchez pinch hitting for the pitcher spot, Clint Barmes would reach 3rd on a wild pitch by Chapman. But Chapman would start showing his flame thrower arm, striking out Sanchez and getting Starling Marte to pop out to end the game.

Player of the Game:

After losing two of three from the Reds, the Pirates head to Atlanta for a three game set with the Braves. James McDonald takes the mound for the Pirates, opposing Atlanta's Brandon Beachy. First pitch, 7:10PM.
