Burnett K's 12 as McCutchen's Home Run Sends Pirates to Shutout Win

PITTSBURGH - After losing three of four from the Tigers, the Pirates lost in heartbreaking fashion to the Reds on Friday night. Andrew McCutchen got the Pirates run support, but the pitching faltered, sending the Pirates spiraling to their fourth straight loss. With the NL Central lead now only a half game ahead of the Reds, the Pirates send their ace A.J. Burnett to the mound, to oppose the Reds ace Johnny Cueto.

In the top of the 1st inning, A.J. Burnett showed why he is the veteran ace on the team, getting Winker and Phillips to strike out, followed by a fly out by Joey Votto to end the inning. In the bottom of the 1st, Starling Marte led off with a single, followed by a strikeout from Travis Snider. With McCutchen up to bat, Marte got picked off at 1st to give the Pirates 2 outs. Then, so eerily similar to last nights game, Andrew McCutchen crushed a 1-2 pitch from Cueto to deep left field for a solo home run, giving the Pirates a 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the 2nd, Burnett continued his strikeout tear, getting Jay Bruce and Chris Heisey to strike out swinging. Todd Frazier would line to left for a single, but would be stranded at first as Ryan Hanigan grounded out to end the inning. Johnny Cueto would match Burnett in the bottom of the 2nd, getting Jones to strike out, followed by ground outs from Michael McKenry and Jordy Mercer to end the inning.

The third inning was much of the same, as Burnett allowed a single to Winker in the top of the inning and Cueto allowed a single to Barmes in the bottom of the inning, neither advancing past second base. In the top of the 4th, after striking out Votto and getting Bruce to ground out, Chris Heisey lined to right for a single, then advancing on a single from Frazier to put two on with two outs.

But Burnett would end the threat, getting Ryan Hanigan to fly out at the warning track to end the inning. The only offense the Pirates would muster in the bottom of the 4th, was a single by Pedro Alvarez with one out, followed by a fielder's choice from Garrett Jones. Michael McKenry would fly out to end the inning. The 5th, 6th, and 7th innings saw no hits and no walks, as both Burnett and Cueto retired the sides in order.

In the top of the 8th, with his pitch count closing in on 100, A.J. Burnett dug deep, getting pinch hitter Ryan Ludwick to ground out, Winker to strike out on a 2-2 pitch, and Brandon Phillips to strike out on a 2-2 curveball to end the inning.

With the 1-0 lead heading into the 9th, Jason Grilli received the call, chasing his 18th save on the season. Grilli showed no signs of rust, getting Joey Votto and Jay Bruce to strike out looking and Chris Heisey to fly out to end the game.

Player of the Game:

The Pirates and Reds meet in the rubber match of this three game series tomorrow afternoon, as Wandy Rodriguez opposes spot starter Jonathan Broxton. First pitch, 1:35PM.
