Pirates Lose 2-1 Heartbreaker to Reds

PITTSBURGH -After getting swept in their two game set against the Tigers at PNC Park, the Pirates had lost their straight game of the season, their longest losing streak thus far. Looking to right the ship, the Pirates welcomed the Cincinnati Reds to PNC Park, an NL Central foe on the heels of the Pirates first place lead. Taking the mound for the Pirates would be Francisco Liriano, opposing the Reds Daniel Corcino.

In the top of the 1st inning, Francisco Liriano looked sharp as can be, getting phillips to fly out, followed by a strikeout from Winker and a fly out from Votto to end the inning. After Daniel Corcino got Starling Marte to strike out to end the inning, Andrew McCutchen got the Pirates on the board first, hitting a solo home run to right field, his 100th career home run! giving the pirates a 1-0 lead.

Travis Snider would ground out and Pedro Alvarez would strike out to end the inning. After a scoreless top of the 2nd, Russell Martin singled in the bottom of the 2nd with one out. John McDonald would reach first on a fielder's choice, as Martin was called out at second. Clint Barmes would ground out to end the inning.

In the top of the 3rd, pitcher Daniel Corcino singled with 2 outs, looking to get the Reds offense going. But Brandon Phillips would ground out to Clint Barmes to end the inning. In the top of the 4th, Liriano ran into the first sign of trouble in the game, allowing a lead off double to Winker. After Liriano got Votto to pop out to Alvarez at third, Todd Frazier struck out swinging and Chris Heisey flew out to end the inning. Daniel Corcino would get the Pirates beef of the order in McCutchen, Alvarez, and Jones to strike out to get a clean 1-2-3 inning.

Francisco Liriano returned the favor in the top of the 5th, getting Ludwick, Hanigan, and Negron to strike out in order.

In the top of the 6th, Liriano again ran into trouble with 2 outs, as Winker singled, followed by Votto reaching on a ball deflected off of Marte for a single. But Liriano would power past Frazier, striking him out to end the inning. Marte would lead off the bottom of the 6th with a double, but couldn't get past 2nd, as Snider, McCutchen, and Alvarez would fly out to end the inning.

The Reds finally got to Liriano in the 7th, as Chris Heisey led of with a single and then scored in a double by Ryan Ludwick to tie the game at 1.

Ryan Hanigan would ground out, advancing Ludwick to 3rd with two outs. But Liriano would get Corcino to fly out to end the scoring threat and the inning. In the bottom of the 7th, Garrett Jones singled, but would be called out at 2nd on a fielder's choice by Russell Martin. Martin would take 2nd on a wild pitch but would be stranded as Clint Barmes grounded out to end the inning.

The biggest blow of the game came in the 8th with Mark Melancon pitching, as Winker singled with one out, followed by a walk issued to Joey Votto. Frazier would reach on a fielder's choice, putting runners on 1st and 3rd with 2 outs. Working the count to 2-2, Chris Heisey would single on the 6th pitch of the at bat, scoring Lutz, pinch running for Winker, giving the Reds a 2-1 lead.

The Pirates made some noise in the bottom of the 8th, as pinch hitter Gaby Sanchez led off with a single, followed by a single from Starling Marte. But as Travis Snider hit a liner to 2nd, Sanchez was picked off after the ball was caught for a double play.

Andrew McCutchen would ground out to end the inning. After a clean half inning from Chris Leroux, the Pirates were down to their final three outs. With Aroldis Chapman pitching, Pedro Alvarez led off with a walk. Garrett Jones got the fans to their feet as he hit a long fly ball to center field, only to be caught at the wall for the first out. Then, the worst possible happening for the Pirates, Russell Martin would ground into a double play to end the game.
