Bullpen Implodes as Cubs Use 3-Run 8th to Down Pirates 6-4

PITTSBURGH - Pedro Alvarez's 3-run blast in extra innings, gave the Pirates the victory in game one of this three game set. Looking to take the series in game two, the Pirates sent A.J. Burnett to the mound to oppose Jeff Samardzija in a rematch of their Opening Day battle.

The Cubs got to Burnett right away, as Darwin Barney singled with one out in the top of the 1st. David DeJesus then reached on a fielders choice, as Barney was called out at 2nd. Starlin Castro singled, following Anthony Rizzo reaching on a single deflected off of Pedro Alvarez. With the bases loaded, Jorge Soler singled, scoring DeJesus & Castro to give the Cubs a 2-0 lead.

In the top of the 2nd, Burnett walked Jeff Samardzija on four pitches, who would then score on a double from Darwin Barney who would be called out at 3rd, as he gave the Cubs a 3-0 lead. The Pirates would cut the deficit to 2 in the bottom of the 2nd, as a Garrett Jones single would score Alvarez after his triple, give the Cubs a 3-2 lead.

The Pirates threatened in the bottom of the 3rd, as Marte and McCutchen were on with two outs, each having singled. But Pedro Alvarez would ground out to end the inning. After a 1-2-3 inning from Burnett in the Top of the 4th, the Pirates offense again came alive, as Jones and Inge singled, with Jones scoring on a sac fly from Barmes to cut the score to 3-2.

In the bottom of the 5th, Travis Snider would homer, tying the game at 3.

As Burnett had settled in, mowing down the Cubs in order, Garrett Jones provided Burnett the opportunity to earn his 4th win, as he would hit a solo home run to give the Pirates a 4-3 lead.

As Burnett's pitch count was too high for him to continue, Hurdle turned to lefty Tony Watson for the 8th inning. Watson would allow singles to DeJesus, Castro, and Sappelt to load the bases with no outs. Watson then walked Anthony Rizzo, which scored DeJesus to tie the game at 4.

Duke Welker would be called upon to get Watson out of his jam, but was unable to prevail. His first batter faced was Jorge Soler, who he would get to hit into a sac fly, scoring Castro to give the Cubs a 5-4 lead. Navarro would single to again load the bases. Pinch hitter Brett Jackson walked on four pitches, scoring Sappelt to increase the Cubs lead to 2. Welker would get Barney to strike out to end the inning.

The Pirates couldn't muster any offense in the 8th, and then ran into Carlos Marmol in the 9th, who mowed them down in order to end the game and give the Cubs the victory.

Player of the Game:

The Pirates and Cubs meet tomorrow afternoon for the rubber game of the three game set, as Wandy Rodriguez opposes Scott Baker. First pitch, 12:35PM.
